...to have a beard of that length ?
Even if I stopped shaving for a year, I wouldn't have half the length he has !
Same for Mullah Omar, how do these guys do it ?!?

well, to answer your question, I haven't shaved for 5 days, and I've already more beard than you would have in one month.

Different people, different beards...

I don't think they've ever shaved it. Are they allowed to shave??  Confused

I have some Indian (I believe) neighbors where the male members of the family don't shave or cut their hair. Anyone with more info on this? I've never asked anything and I'm kind of clueless.

I'm indian and it depends on what part of the country your family originated; if northern, then they grow a beard while the southerners (like my folks) dont. Of course then there are the lines of those who hold their traditions that those that want to be like the USA, i.e. globalization is not entirely the US's fault. (make choices available and people will choose -- that's why i say markets dont exist)

I grew up here so I could care less, I have to shave within 2 days or it itches so much that i have breakouts. I have like hypersensitive skin, so y'know, it sux.

Besides, some people near me think I am muslim when they see me before i shave -- there's ignorance for ya.  Insane

Most countries than have citizen that grow a beard will likely do it for tradition, i.e. older cultures.

Thanks Lehpron!

Is it for religious reasons or traditional? Or combination of the both?

I understand he's very anal about keeping his beard clean. It's very well known that he gives it a good rinse once every six months whether he needs to or not.  Smile

Prophet Mohammed, may peace be unto him wore his beard long, and as the prohet of God he was followed around and many things he did to please God so a lot of things were approved by him to be done, one of those the long beard. It is not required, but desired. As with anything in Islam, it must be kept very clean and neat. If you find a guy with a long unkempt beard, more likely than not he is not a muslim.

Just the fact that it is the middle east does not automatically mean those are observing of the muslim faith. The bottom line is that it has also become a middle east cultural custom, just like the long white gowns they wear, jelabiyas.

Read your first post. You said:

There are lots and lots of Muslims with unkempt beards in the Middle East (especially the Pakistani and Afghani expatriates). Are you saying that they are all not muslims because of their unkempt beards?
