Well, the UK's Autocar magazine, usually relatively dismissal of US cars has just test driven the Ford GT and has declared it the best sports car you can currently buy (smashes the 2nd placed Ferrari 360 Modena) and has rated it in the top 5 sports cars of all time, and this in a car that is still undergoing final tweaking! The only bad thing is this beautiful automobile is going to retail at £100k in the UK  Sad Bugger  Sad

I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

The first time I saw a picture of the new Ford GT, I was speechless! That is the best retro-modern car design yet!

Well, it's certainly getting international rave reviews, and I have seen them in "typical" traffic settings here in the Detroit area. Visually stunning, for sure. Whether or not it will prove to be one of the "top 5 of all times" is quite another question as styling is only a portion of the equation. To be honest, auto writers, even though some are quite objective and politically unswayed, are, in general, an impressionable bunch, and such accolades are probably a bit premature. This is a deal where the final opinions will depend on the total vehicle (didn't FoMoCo use "Total Performance" as an advertising campaign slogan years ago?); it's simply too early to make such blanket statements, although I hope it lives up to expectations...jack

"The best sports car you can currently buy" ?

Ahem. And that with the Modena on a 2nd place? Just to name a few, you can currently buy the likes of Pagani Zondas, Lamborghini Murcielagos & Gallardos, Porsche 911 GT2, Porsche 911 GT3(RS), Porsche Carrera GT, BMW M3 CSL, Koenigsegg CC and so on.

"in the top 5 sports cars of all time"

Beside those mentioned above, they want to tell me that this plays in the same league as a McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo, Porsche 911 GT1 or Porsche 959? They're kidding, right?

But wait, wasn't it this suspicous "Autocar" which said a Jaguar is better than an Audi, BMW or Mercedes? Must be the Sun of car magazines.

Oh, and what happened to the 40 ?

Ive also seen the GT around in typical Metro Detroit traffic too... Sharp car..

I saw a few of em at the Ford 100 Anniversary, not bad not bad... And to think the entire original idea sprang from Henry Ford II getting mad at Enzo Ferrari.

Perhaps another 123 at LeMans?

Eh, its not a new car. The GT40 is from the 1960s...same idea only put into a 2003 setting. Extrodinary car? Yes. One of the bests of all time? I highly doubt it.

Well in the Autocar road test they got 0-60 MPH in 3.2 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 MPH. What apparently set the car apart from the Ferrari was the superlative handling.

The top 5 Sports cars of all time are now rated as;

1. Maclaren F1
2. Porsche 998
3. Ferrari F40
4. Ford GT
5. Caterham 400.

Actually Racko it pissed all over those cars you spoke of. Also, it is not just Autocar magazine - now Top Gear has ranked it as 3rd best sports car of all time (Behind Maclaren F1 and Ferrari F40). The only current car close to it in terms of handling and performance is the Ferrari 360 Modena. And it's a Ford! (Albeit a Ford that costs more than a Lamborghini Gallardo!)

Oh and Autocar never said that Jaguar is better than BMW - it said the new 5 series was a pile of horse manure and that the equivalent Jag was a better car.

"The only current car close to it in terms of handling and performance is the Ferrari 360 Modena"

You're kidding, right? The 360 Modena is outperformed on track by many other cars you can currently buy, just to name a few:

BMW M3 CSL, Porsche 911 GT2, Porsche 911 GT3, Porsche 911 Turbo, Pagani Zonda, Lamborghini Murcielago.

The mag Sport Auto tests high-performance cars on the legendary Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, internationally acceptet as the most demanding, dangerous and complete race track, and on the Hockenheimring, and all these cars mentioned above can do it in a bit less than 8 minutes, while the 360 Modena needs 8:09 min to drive through the green hell.

The fact that the car does 0-100 (I suspect the 60 were mph?) in just 3.2 seconds actually indicates that it's not such a great-handling car, simply because it lacks downforce and can't take turns as fast as cars with higher downforce.

What's a Porsche 998 btw? (Serious question)
