Baseball Pop-up Question

In baseball, why does the pitcher always point his finger up in the sky when there's a pop-up? Isn't it pretty obvious to everyone it's a pop-up? Maybe there's a legitimate reason for it, but to me it seems silly. Maybe just a habit that developed over the years for no good reason?

He's not just pointing-he's calling out which infielder has the best angle on the ball, and, in a sense, directing that infielder to take charge of the pop up.

I think it's baseball stupidity. Just like when an outfielder makes a nice, diving catch and the camera shows him throwing the ball back to the infield and immediately holding up two fingers to show there are now two outs. A lot of baseball is inexplicable, and that's precisely why l love it.
