I don’t think you can sing if you haven’t learned to live.
I don’t think you can help if you haven’t learned to give.
I don’t think you can write a song if you’ve never sung before.
I don’t think you can tell a tale if you’ve not heard all the lore.
No, I don’t think life will be it’s best if you ride too high a horse,
And I don’t think egotistic selfishness walks a worthwhile course.
I don’t think great big houses that stand on sculpted hills
And drugs for your depression mixed with sleeping pills
Can make the music of the world come back into your life
Or solve the problems that you have or ease the gentle strife.
I don’t think you can paint a picture without first holding a brush
I don’t think you can do a job well if you do it in a rush.
I don’t think life’s worth living if you pretend you have it all,
But it wouldn’t be anyway because that’s rich men’s downfall.
If you’ve never seen the sunrise so gentle and so sweet
How can you sing of dawns surreal enough to make your heart beat?
If you’ve never heard a bird sing as the wind comes gently by
How can you write a song of breezes that does anything but lie?
If you’ve never walked through wilderness or seen Alaskan nights
As the sky danced with the colors of the brilliant Northern Lights,
How can you sing with all the power of those who’ve walked and seen?
How can you be human if human’s all you’ve ever been?
I don’t think there are answers to your life to get from books,
I don’t think you can fall in love by falling for their looks.
I don’t think you can be a man if you cannot show your tears
I don’t think you can be courageous if you cannot face your fears.
I think that if you learn to live and run and dance and scream
And if you see the world itself not just as it might seem
And if you walk up mountains and climb down waterfalls
And stand up to the proud yet hear the weak ones’ calls,
And if you once – just once – be different just because
And if you let yourself down but keep on standing up
And if you know the world won’t hate you if you never give up
Then I think you will see this place I’ve seen between the drifting clouds
On peaceful river shorelines in the shadows and the shrouds
Within the passing moments with the flapping of birds’ wings
The silent Earthly beauty with wind and wave that sings
For though math will definite it and theories well explain
Songs are not worth singing unless of joy or endless pain
For music is the melody of things that words can’t say
The passions and emotions than turn dark night to bright day.
