I saw parts of this 10 part series when it was on HBO 2 years ago. I now have the full series on DVD, and find it to be an outstanding mini series....Has anyone else see it, have it on DVD, liked it, don't like it..?? Your thoughts.......???

In my opinion the best contemporary WWII movie/mini series.

The last episode was really moving...the end of the war and the accomplishments these soldiers made.

Saving Private Ryan was good...this was 10x better.

I never saw it on HBO, but about 6 months ago I bought the DVD's and watched them all that day. This is one of the best mini-series I've seen, ever.

Really good series but they really need to find someone other then Dale Dye to be the military advisor.

Dye was a Vietnam era Marine Captain and a lot of the things he taught the actors about hand signals and tactics are from that Era. An Advisor familiar with WWII era signals and tactics would have been a better choice.

I have heard stories from more then one vet that they, when they see that film can't figure out what all the hand waving is about!

For a real good read I suggest the Steven Ambroses book on the same troops. It is amazing what got left out of the series. Especially their activities stateside prior to deployment to Europe.

I have that series on DVD as well. Fantastic show. I think HBO is making some of the best educational and historic series today, in terms of faithfulness and production values. Anyone see "From the Earth to the Moon"?

Great series, especially the episode about the old TV science guy getting fired and the one of the second landing on the moon.

I will grant them credit, they learned from the mistakes on Saving Private Ryan.

But they still need to find a WWII military expert, and Dale Dye isn't it!

OK, Dale Dye might get a few of the details wrong, like the hand signals. But with his help, they did manage to make some extraordinarily realistic war films, such as Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, and others. He puts the actors through a real boot camp where they at least spend a few weeks learning what an infantryman must endure, and I think it helps in the final result.

Unfortunately, the Greatest Generation of WWII veterans is fast dying out. Both my grandfathers fought in that war, and they are gone. Those that are left are aproaching their 90s now - those that were raw recruits. Practically none who were senior officers or instructors are left.

OH I have no problem with putting Dale Dye as the advisor for a Nam or later military film.

I also agree that he did a pretty good job of teaching those guys basic military skills and PT but keep in mind in Band of Brothers a lot of that credit also goes to those Royal Army guys that actually ran the actors boot camp. Some of which is covered by that home video that Ron Livingston made and is on the extra features disk.

But for WWII specific tactics and signals they really need to get a better advisor to supplement or take over from Dale at that point.
