Woman Says She's Strom Thurmond's Illegitimate Child
78-Year-Old Retiree Says She's Mixed-Race Daughter of Former Senator
By JEREMIAH MARQUEZ, AP

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 13) - A 78-year-old retired schoolteacher is coming forward after years of silence to claim she is the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, her attorney said Saturday.

Essie Mae Washington-Williams, who lives in Los Angeles, had long been rumored to be the daughter of the one-time segregationist, who died June 26 at the age of 100. She is coming forward now at the urging and encouragement of her children, attorney Frank K. Wheaton said.

''She's decided to come forward to bring some closure to what has been thought to be an old family secret,'' Wheaton told The Associated Press.

''We're not trying to upset the Thurmond estate. We are merely bringing closure to Essie Mae's life, so her children have an opportunity to know from where they come, whether those ancestors are black or white matters not. It is part of our American history.''

Williams told The Washington Post that Thurmond privately acknowledged her as his daughter and had provided financial support since 1941. The Post first reported her claims on its Web site Saturday.

Williams, who has scheduled a news conference in Columbia, S.C., on Wednesday, previously denied rumors that Thurmond, the nation's oldest and longest-serving senator, was her father.

''There was an agreement between the parties that she would never discuss the fact that Sen. Thurmond was her father,'' another of Williams' attorneys, Glenn Walters, told The AP. ''He never denied that Ms. Washington-Williams was his daughter.''

Walters said Williams was not seeking money and did not want to challenge Thurmond's will: ''She simply wants the truth about her life to be told.''

Those close to Thurmond said they were unsure about Williams' claim.

''I really don't know anything about that story, so you'll need to talk to someone else,'' said Thurmond's widow, Nancy Moore Thurmond. The couple separated in 1991.

''I certainly have no answer one way or the other,'' said Bettis Rainsford, a longtime family friend. ''I'm sure the senator may have sowed some wild oats in his early days, but certainly I have no information about that.''

Doris Strom Costner, a distant cousin of Thurmond's, said she doesn't think the claim is true.

''I don't appreciate anyone coming forth after he's dead, you know? It doesn't make good sense,'' Costner said.

Williams told the Post she waited until now to go public with her story because she didn't want to embarrass herself or hurt Thurmond's career.

''I want to bring closure to this,'' she said. ''It is a part of history.''

In seven decades of politics, Thurmond gained fame and infamy as an arch-segregationist, but he later came to support a holiday for the slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

Williams claims Thurmond fathered her long before his political career started, when he was a 22-year-old living in his parents' home in Edgefield, S.C. Her mother, then 16, had been working as a maid in the Thurmonds' home.

If challenged by the Thurmond family, Williams is ready to submit to DNA tests, Wheaton said.

Williams said she has documents to validate her claim, including cashier's check stubs, mementos from Thurmond and a letter from an intermediary who delivered money from the senator. She provided the Post with a copy of a 1998 Thurmond letter thanking her ''for the nice Father's Day note you sent me.''

She told the newspaper she received money at least once a year in sessions arranged by Thurmond's Senate staff. In recent years, as the senator's health declined, she said, financial assistance was passed through a Thurmond relative in South Carolina.

Wheaton said the amount of money Thurmond provided over the years was ''a very substantial amount'' but less than $1 million.

Williams' mother, Carrie Butler, was unmarried when she gave birth to her in 1925. Butler's neighbors in the impoverished section of Edgefield helped feed and clothe the child, according to Post interviews with local residents.

Butler's sister, Essie, took the child when she was 6 months old to live with a married aunt, Mary Washington, in Coatesville, Pa., a Philadelphia suburb.

Williams told the Post she first met Thurmond around 1941, when she returned to Edgefield for a visit at age 16. Her mother was suffering from an untreatable kidney disease and insisted on introducing her to her father, Williams said.

In a meeting lasting 20 to 30 minutes, Williams said, Thurmond called her a ''very lovely daughter.''

''I was very happy. I knew I had a father somewhere, and it was wonderful to meet him.''

Williams claims she had another conversation with Thurmond in 1947, when he was governor of South Carolina and a year away from running for president on a Dixiecrat platform of segregation.

''He asked her directly, 'How does it feel to be the daughter of the governor and not be able to tell anyone about it?''' Wheaton said. ''She said it felt fine.''

Well, what could have been a storm just passed by like a breeze. The Thurmond family acknowledged Washington-Williams's claim, Strom Jr. plans on meeting with Essie Mae, and Washington-Williams gave a press conference stating why she disclosed the truth. What seems more incredible to me is how fast Congressman Joe Wilson (my Congressman, not that I voted for him) and State Senator John Courson were to dismiss Washington-Williams, even when her paternity had been written about fairly frequently and it was somewhat common knowledge among Thurmond's staffers. As much as I respect Strom for what he did for South Carolina, it's time to kill off the cult of the infallibility of Strom.

This guy was a complete pig. He impregnates a 16yo black girl when he is 22, then effectively disowns the girl & his new daughter & then preaches segregation.

What an absolute ass.

Attacking him?? He fathered a daughter who, if her true identity came out 50 years ago, would've truly crippled his racist political career.

His daughter showed she was above politics, and gave a truly impressive and classy press conference today. Hopefully Strom would've been proud if his daugher. She endured a lot, so he could succeed.

Boo Hoo. Time to change the diapers. If we were to adopt your insane logic, then Peter the Great, Mussolini, and Attila, the Hun would be beyond reproach simply by virtue of being dead.

Actually liberals exposed JFK's affairs with Marilyn Monroe, etc etc etc.
Who incidentally never ran on a platform or celibacy.

Sorry, Yyz, but wrong. Strom kept in contact with Essie Mae throughout his life, wrote a letter of recommendation that got her into South Carolina State and financially supported her and her family throughout the years.

B757300:
By no means is this an attack on Strom. I'm a South Carolinian and while I've lived in the tail-end of his tenure, the effects that Strom has had on this state are immeasurable. I merely feel that our local politicians are too quick to deify him, just as Republicans at the national level are too quick to deify Reagan and Democrats at the national level are too quick to deify JFK. Had you come out and said whatever about Kennedy, you'd have heard little complaint from me (for one, I feel that Kennedy's contributions were minimal outside of the space program, but mainly because I believe one can separate a man's political life from their private life), mainly because I'm of the opinion that God and history will be his, Strom's, and everyone else's ultimate judge, not us mere mortals in the contemporary.

Fast update - went by the Strom Thurmond monument on the State House grounds today...some wag had crossed through the "Father of 4 children" inscription with chalk and had written "5" above it and put Essie Mae's name along with Nancy Moore, Strom Jr., Julie, and Paul. The reaction here has been interesting, indeed.

Imisspiedmont, thank you for your comments. Being of mixed race myself I'm finding these events QUITE interesting. "The State" newspaper also ran an interesting editorial which I've copied below.

Thurmond’s daughter could help races come to terms with shared heritage
By WARREN BOLTON
Associate Editor

NOW THAT ESSIE Mae Washington-Williams, the biracial daughter of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, has put truth on the table, maybe we can talk about it.

I’m not talking about rehashing details of Mrs. Washington-Williams’ visits with her father, the financial help he gave or how it is she kept the secret so long.

I’m talking about the truth that has been around scores longer than the 100 years Sen. Thurmond spent on this earth and that has been as poorly kept as was the fact he had a daughter by a black woman. It’s a truth black and white people have failed to face, so much so that it haunts our relationships today.

That truth is that there are thousands of Essie Mae Washington-Williamses, some of whom don’t even know who they are. We are far more kin than some of us want to admit.

While we don’t talk about it much, for decades upon decades in the South — from slavery through the 20th century — powerful white men had relationships with black women, particularly house servants. Children came out of many of those encounters.

Perhaps, in rare cases, it was love; often it was rape and sexual exploitation. More often than not, white women didn’t talk about it and the larger society only whispered about it.

It was a strange paradox, white men having relationships with black women and producing children, but often publicly denouncing blacks and the mixing of the races. That is the historical significance of Strom Thurmond, once chief among segregationists, fathering a biracial child.

Many say they always knew Sen. Thurmond had a biracial daughter; they had heard the rumors, the whispers.

Mrs. Washington-Williams didn’t whisper on Wednesday, however. She boldly proclaimed her heritage and stepped into history. She said stories like hers and that of Sally Hemmings, a slave who had children by Thomas Jefferson, are important parts of history, and there are many others. “Not everyone knows about these stories that helped to make America what it is today,” she said.

She’s right. These relationships, as hidden and even sinister as some of them were, helped make America what it is. Our refusal to accept that has tainted relationships and stigmatized many children of today.

You may say that was all in the distant past. But it was just five years ago that South Carolina voters agreed to delete an archaic prohibition against interracial marriage from our constitution. It was only three years ago that Bob Jones University lifted its ban against interracial dating and marriage among students.

While it is somewhat more accepted, many of us are still not comfortable with the races mixing. Black people and white people today can’t date and marry and have children without being scrutinized — and sometimes ridiculed — because of our inability to reconcile our history.

When biracial couples walk into restaurants, people stare and whisper. Biracial children are taunted at school — by students and even some teachers.

Some people — black and white — go as far as trying to force biracial people to choose: Are you black or white? It’s such a big deal that there was significant debate over whether biracial citizens should be allowed to define themselves as such in the Census. The 2000 Census was the first to let Americans identify themselves as being of more than one race. The majority of the nearly 7 million people who checked multiple boxes included “black” as part of their heritage. There are blacks and whites who have problems with this. However, our world is becoming more diverse all the time, and it is important we fully embrace who we are.

This is one among many other heavy burdens blacks and whites have lugged around, from one century to another.

Mrs. Washington-Williams said making her public proclamation has lightened her load. “I am not bitter. I am not angry. In fact, there is a great sense of peace that has come over me,” she said. “I am Essie Mae Washington-Williams, and, at last, I feel completely free.”

Free because she has been able to openly proclaim her heritage so long denied. The rest of us collectively have a truth to face so that we too might be free.

This is bigger than Strom Thurmond’s legacy. It’s about our future and the generations that will follow us. If we let the Essie Mae Washington-Williams story pass without addressing this issue — and many others — we will miss an opportunity.

In stepping forward, Mrs. Washington-Williams might help us do something her father, despite all his power and influence, was unable — or unwilling — to do: help bring the races together.

Her existence personifies an intersection of black and white, past and present. If she and the Thurmond family, which has been gracious in acknowledging her story, develop an ongoing relationship, it will be a tremendous example of people coming to terms with who they are and moving forward.

So too should we all — black and white — own up to our heritage. It won’t always be pleasant and it won’t always be easy. But it’s something we must do if we’re all to be completely free.
