Has anyone out there tried the Atkins diet? If so, do you have any tips? I'm on my first week, and, although its going well so far, I can see myself getting tempted to cheat, especially with the holidays coming up real soon.

Tried it and quit it. I was craving citrus fruit too much Mainly, my big advice would be drink lots of water, and when tempted, try to pursue other things. Out of sight out of mind worked well.

I've been on it since May. Lost about 30 pounds and went from a 40 to a 36 inch waist. I'm pretty much on "maintenance" and so I do enjoy citrus fruit as well as meat and occasional pasta. No bread, no transfats. Very happy.

My wife and oldest son have done it. My wife has lost about 35lbs, and my son about 13. My wife looks mahvalous!! Since she hurt her back in '98, and had our last son, she can't really exercise much, and this diet has done wonders for her figure and her confidence.
The only think she complains about is that it dehydrates her more than normal eating. And she doesn't even consider it a diet anymore-just the way she eats now.

Interesting.....I was just about to start this very topic when I saw it already posted. In June I weighed 185 and then started exercising and now I weight about 170. Since I'm 5'8", My goal is 150-155. I want to try Atkins, but I realize that this is next to impossible around the holidays with what my family likes to cook. So I've come to the realization that I'm just going to have to wait until after Christmas, or else I'll offend my grandma, mother, and lots of other people too since I'd have to turn down their meals.
So, what are the drawbacks to Atkins, if any?

Hey James, I read in either Sports Illustrated or Men's Health, can't remember which one, that for every 15 lbs one loses, one can regain as much .5" to their penis!

OR! you guys can just eat right, and excersize, in a period of about 4 months, I have lost about 30 pounds without really limiting my intake of food.... I excersize!!! right now, I'm tryng to get my keg, into a 6 pack.... which will require another year at the speed I'm taking it... Try to get your upper body workouts, your lower body works out everyday (walking).... now that being said... and it being 11:15 in the "evening" I'ma go work out...

I did it, lost loads of weight but my advice is that starting the Atkins Diet over the festive period is going to be one hell of a test of your resolve!!!

Jhooper,
I am not a doctor / lawyer / psychic, so take what I say with a big grain of salt...
Every diet has risks, Atkin's biggest is it is very hard on your kidneys, particularily in the first month. You absolutely must drink lots of water. They recommend at least 64 ounces. Also, you absolutely must spread it out over the whole day, not all at once.
Atkins also requires a certain amount of fat intake per day, especially at the beginning. This can be dangerous to people with heart conditions.
Other than that, it must be followed very closely, especially the first month. As with any diet, exercise is an important component of the diet; without making at least a minimal effort to do some physical activity any weight loss will be marginal at best.
Keep in mind the long term goal of the diet isn't weight loss, it is healthy eating, which is a topic most diets fail to stress. Many people fail because they lose weight, think they are done, then stop eating appropriately. Atkin's big points are that weight is gained from excessive Carbohydrates. While some carbs are ok, most food we eat these days is so loaded with sugars, starches, and processed grains that cause an average person to eat thousands of unnecessary carbs a day. By cutting out carbs almost entirely, then slowly reintroducing natural carbs, you'll develop a balance while eating more healthy foods.

I tried it last year and lost about 15 lbs.......I really do enjoy eating meat but I missed my fruits & carbs..............so I just decided to change my eating habits for life and since then I have lost another 15 lbs. I have been on maintenance for about 6 months and have not gained anything back! Trust me I still eat meat but only really really low fat cuts.
This time of year would be really hard to stick with it! Good Luck!
