Defcon=Defense Condition

I don't know if the term is still used, but it used to be a scale to show the threat level and response level against the US and Nato militaries.

Might want to monitor this thread:

Is it still in use or has it been retired with the cold war?

Shoot for a good explaintion there was a movie that came out in the early 1980's, I think it was one of Mathew Brodericks first and had Lea Thompson in it. Kid hacks into NORAD's computers. Can't remember the name of it, but they kind of went into that DEFCON thing again.

Should add that Defcon 1 translates into a state of war, AFAIK the US Military never went over Defcon 2 and that was during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

It is refers to the United States' Strategic "Defense Condition".

When we're at peace, we're at DEFCON-5.

We've been @ DEFCON-3 multiple times including the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, the wars in Iraq, and on September 11th.

The only time we went to DEFCON-2 was during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

DEFCON-1 would be full scale nuclear war.

Made in Seattle before it became popular.

War Games with Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy. "Would you like to play a game?"

As I said above, DEFCON is still used. Strategic Command went to DEFCON-3 on September 11th and scrambled the E-4B fleet.

Ally Sheedy not Lea Thompson?

My memory must be slipping, Of course in 80 I was still too young to really notice the actresses  Laugh out loud

Still, the shots of a pre-Starbucks Seattle are pretty cool.

Yeah, it was a 21 year old Ally Sheedy.

War Games is so cheesy and unbelievable I can't help but watch it when it comes on.

Yeah, it was the start of the great 1980's genra of film....The teenage hero saving adults from themselves.

Other examples include Iron Eagle, and Dirty Dancing.

Still it is nice to have a film that documents that there was a pre-microsoft Seattle without a Starbucks in it  Laugh out loud

I haven't heard of DEFCON in a while, but recently they were using THREATCONs which may be a similar system. I believe we went to THREATCON Delta (the highest) on Sept. 11, 2001. Now, I believe they're using what's called FPCON (Force Protection Condition) and INFOCON (Information Protection Condition).

DEFCON is used in relation to our strategic condition. It is usually used in relation to a nuclear threat.

ThreatCon existed before September 11th. On 9-11, Washington and New York were @ ThreatCon Delta and the rest of the country was placed @ ThreatCon Charlie.

Questions like this remind me just how old I am though it helps that Brunswick737 is so young. And yes, the movie 'War Games' provides an excellent explanation of the Defcon scale even if it's basically light, 'popcorn' cinema. L-188, just FYI, the defense computer in the movie was called the W.O.P.R. (for War Operations Programmed Response) although it was also referred to as Joshua, after the dead son of its' designer. Nice moral lesson about war in the film ("The only winning move is not to play.") but it was preposterous on an epic scale.

"The only time we went to DEFCON-2 was during the Cuban Missile Crisis."

Another thing that reminds me I'm old. Unlike most of you, I actually remember this (I was 7 at the time) and it was indeed, a scary time. Very tough for my 2nd grade teacher to explain it to us kids (try softpedalling the Armegeddon scenario!) but she did a good job. Then Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev's ominous "We will bury you!" threat still echoes in my head and we went through all those solemn civil defense drills which probably wouldn't have done squat in an actual nuclear war. Thankfully, he turned out to be a paper tiger in the face of JFK's ultimatum and pulled the missiles out of Cuba. I do believe, however, that we were frighteningly close to an actual nuclear conflict; hopefully, this was as close as the world will ever come to one.

As I recall, the home computer in War Games was an IMSAI 8080...my good friend still has his...was my first attempt at helping him program it back in 1978(?)...no such thing as DOS! You input the initial program via front panel switches...very far removed from todays systems...typical memory was 4 to 8K!
