GM Unveils 2005 Corvette.... And It's Gorgeous!

General Motors has unveiled the sixth generation Corvette, and, contrary to what I expected, it is drop dead gorgeous!

The highlights:

-First Corvette with fixed headlamps since 1962. I thought it would be ass ugly, instead I think it's the most beautiful Corvette since the 1963-1967 "Mid Year" Vettes. Lots of styling cues from past generation Corvettes, but they managed to avoid an unoriginal "retro" theme

-The 350 is no more.... the LS2 6.0 liter V-8 will generate 400 horsepower and will be the largest and most powerful base powerplant ever in a Corvette

-The 2006 Z06 will have a 427 cubic inch (YEAH BABY, YOU READ THAT RIGHT!) V-8 which is rumored to be "well north" of 500 horsepower.

-Transmission options are still the 4 speed automatic, and for those who know how to properly equip a sports car, the 6 speed manual

-The car is 5 inches shorter, 1 inch narrower. This was done with European markets in mind.

-The Z51 suspension package (as it is known on the C5) will turn into more of a high performance package, bridging what will be the large gap between the base Corvette and the Z06. The Z51 will require the six speed manual, will use tighter and shorter gearing in 1st through 4th gears in order to aid acceleration, will have a taller 5th gear in order to allow higher top speed, and will retain the trademark huge 6th gear overdrive. It includes not only upgraded suspension but also bigger brakes, Goodyear F1 Supercar tires, power steering fluid and transmission fluid coolers, and a number of other upgrades. A Z51 equipped coupe will be pretty much the equal of the present day Z06 in terms of performance.

-Performance numbers for a 6 speed coupe are estimated to be around 4.2 0-60 mph with a top speed of 180 to 185 mph.

-The interior finally gets enormous upgrades in terms of fit and finish and quality of materials used. This was maybe the biggest complaint about the C5. Some new features inside are available like a navigation system and an in dash 6 CD changer.

Okay, here are the pictures.

Gotta love the engine strategy they took.... talk about retro! "There's no replacement for displacement." 400 horses is a beautiful thing indeed.

The styling could not have been done any better, in my opinion. Where the C5 lacks character, the C6 has it in spades.

Here's to America's Sports Car.

It's a new day. Every moment matters. Now, more than ever.

Looks like a unique mix of F360, Callaway C12 and that ever-lasting Corvette design.

I seriously think I just creamed my pants without any influence from any outside variables.

Very very nice. Kudos GM. You can do something right! You didn't mess up one of your only good vehicles.  Big grin

One thing I don't like too much is that the front is too reminiscent of the current Dodge Viper. Otherwise, this is a very nice product.

When that particular model comes with a hydrogen powered engine, count me in. I'd rather save the life of at least one American soldier before i'd buy that.

I guess when the oil reserves run-out, perhaps they'll consider to put in something smaller.

Jutes85, I respect your opinion. However, let's face it. The Corvette will not sell in huge numbers. It is a very small category, so the net effect of having sports cars with powerful engines is very small indeed. It would be much more prudent for government resources to tackle the efficiency of all cars in general, or those that pose greater threats on the environment. This includes many SUV's. I'm in no way bashing SUV's, but what I am saying is that we must be logical if we are going to tackle environmental issues.

For example, Ford Explorers have done more damage to the environment as a whole than Chevrolet Corvettes. Let's not take away what little we can enjoy in today's society.

OK, GM has made a performance upgrade over there only fine product.
This Corvette looks as if GM combined the styling cues of the Ford GT, Mustang and Dodge Viper; thus creating a very beautiful automobile.  Big grin

I'd like to see GM put this power plant in to some full-sized Buicks and Cadillacs.

I am suprised I agree with Captiangomes in all of his post. This is an A.net first in terms of car talk.  Smile

Ford Explorers have done more damage to the environment as a whole than Chevrolet Corvettes

Maybe but what's even worse is the Lexus LX-470, Nissan Armada, H2 and Mercedes M-Class.
These stupid useless vehicles will NEVER be seen towing anything or going off road. They are purley status symbols and they do sell in larger volumes than the Corvette.
Sad.  Sad
Also the Corvette doesn't impair visability for other drivers like all SUVs including the small ones.

GM, thanks for the power upgrade to the Corvette. Now make a decent car people can afford like Ford has been doing
Bring back the Fleetwood Brougham, Caprice Classic, Roadmaster Estate Wagon, and Nienty Eight Regency!

Well of course the had.

You get a good snowfall in Alaska and that Corvette isn't going anywhere until spring.

You aren't going to put out a lot of emissions with your car in the garage for six months.

At least with an Explorer you can much your way don't the streets before the snowplows get a chance to hit it.

Yet L-188 raises another good point!  Smokin cool

I've never even been to Alaska yet and I know you won't even find a Lexus, Mercedes or Porshe SUV. Yet you will find plenty of Ford Explorers in Alaska.
Therefore the Ford Explorers serve a purpose and is not the SUV to pick on.
Yet so many so called enviornmentalist love to pick on the Ford Explorer as the root of all evil as they drive around in Toyota Highlanders.
Makes NO sense to me.  Confused
