Taliban Kills Cows to Atone for 'Delay' on Statues

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The Taliban ordered the slaughter of 100 cows on Thursday to atone for its ``delay'' in destroying Afghanistan (news - web sites)'s historic statues of the Buddha.

The movement's Voice of Shariat radio said its supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar had ordered the slaughter of 12 cows in the capital Kabul and at least three each in 29 other Taliban-held provincial capitals.

``For any delay...made in the demolition of statues in Afghanistan, 100 cows will be sacrificed as a recompense,'' the radio's Persian-language program said in a broadcast monitored in Islamabad.

The slaughter was in atonement for having delayed the destruction since the Taliban took power in most of Afghanistan more than four years ago, it said.

The radical Islamic movement which seized power in 1996 issued a decree on February 27 for the destruction of all Afghanistan's mainly Buddhist statues on the grounds that they were heathen idols.

It carried out the task in the teeth of international protests and appeals to save the country's cultural heritage.

The destroyed statues included two world-renowned giant Buddhas carved out of a cliff near the central town of Bamiyan more than 1,500 years ago.

Taliban Foreign Minister Wakil Ahmad Muttawakil told reporters in the Afghan capital Kabul on Wednesday that idols worshipped by the country's small Hindu minority had been spared.

Yea...

something is seriously wrong with these people... when I first caught that here I was like "okay this has got to be a lie"... but to my horror it isn't... what is up with these people? I know they are very strong in their faith but isn't that going just a bit too far being totally culturally insensitive? Sheesh...

These guys are great. They are just saying to the world that they are going to do their level best to piss off every major religion. First destroying the Buddas and now going after the Hindus with their slaughter of cows. What's next--burning crosses to offend Protestants, killing priests to offend Catholics, banning all L. Ron Hubbard books to offend Scientologists, prohibiting triangles to offend Pythagorians?

These are juvenile stunts that betray just how barbaric these people truly are.

The Taliban has done some stupid things but this takes the cake. I'm just wondering if the Taliban is hooked on some bad opium. I'll bet PETA ain't too pleased about this.

My god, who else do they want to offend? They already have Civil Rights Groups, Buddhists, and now Hindus on their tail.

If the Taliban keeps this up. Then they'll soon get theirs very soon. The question is who or what will step up to the plate and derail their regime?

Its strange that they "spared" the Hindu temples where the "Idols' were being actively worshipped, did they not want to strain their relations with India? perhaps they thought the Bhuddist countries to be unimportant and passive to retaliate, that is why they targeted the Bhudda statues, little do they know that even Bhuddism and Hinduism preach goodness and peace in their own way, that is the true message of Islam but sadly its being distorted by the taliban Sad
