CBC SPORTS ONLINE - Canadian curler Scott Patterson passed away Sunday morning. He was 34.

Northern Ontario skip Scott Patterson passed away Sunday after he was involved in a car accident Friday night. He was 34.

In a phone interview with CBC Sports Online, Sgt. Joe Bourdon of the Ontario Provincial Police's North East Region Operations Centre confirmed Patterson passed way in a Sudbury hospital Sunday morning.

Patterson, a native of North Bay, Ont., was in critical condition after he was involved in a serious three-car crash outside of Sudbury Friday night.

Patterson and three other members of his North Bay rink – Greg Cantin, John McClelland and Gerry Cantin – were recovering in Sudbury's St. Joseph's Health Care Centre after the accident.

Sgt. Bourdon told CBC Sports Online that Patterson and his team, on their way to Sudbury for the Northern Ontario Curling Association's challenge round, were hit by an oncoming pick-up truck that crossed the centre line.

A third car trailing the minivan being driven by Patterson was also involved in the wreck.

The driver of the pick-up truck and his eight-year-old daughter were not injured.

Greg Cantin was hospitalized with a spleen injury while his father, Gerry, suffered a broken arm and a knee injury. McClelland sustained various fractures.

Playing out of the North Bay Granite Club, Patterson and his rink represented Northern Ontario at the Brier in 1994 and 1999, narrowly missing out on making the playoffs both times.

Patterson is survived by his wife Tracey, a five-year-old daughter and two-year-old son.
