Hello all...well...I have a dilema that has been bothering be a good bit and I seem to be pulled between a decision that I have to make pretty soon. I am currently enrolled in a great aviation business and management program at my university and I have the option of getting all of my pilot licenses...up to commercial for a sum of about $33K. That's not too bad considering the cost of good flight training/degree programs at places such as Embry-Riddle...etc...Well, my other option is military and I can join say the Air Force after I graduate college and enter Officer candidate school and have two things that are very important to me...no debt and job security. The only thing is what are my options in flying since I don't have perfect 20/20 vision...I know navigator is an option but maybe you guys that know anything about the subject could help me. I have talked to my parents, my friends, my girl, my advisor, and a U.S. Air Force recruiter and I am still in a bind here, since I have to decide about my flight training pretty soon...if I am gonna have to take out a loan and go with it or if I am gonna hold off and join the military. Can you guys provide suggestions, feedback...anything...I really appreciate it guys...

$33K for only up to the Commercial? Ouch! If you are going to spend that kind of money, you should be getting everything through your MEI. I'd say that the Air Force is a great way to go if you can swing it (and if you are disposed to military life), but it sounds like it isn't a sure thing for you. That's ok, there's nothing wrong with giving it a shot and then going the other route if things don't work out.

Just for kicks and giggles, this is what I'd do if I had it to do all over again: I'd go to a state school to do my Aviation degree, a different and more academically stable state school than the one that I ended up going to. I would have stuck with that major so I would have been done with my undergrad a lot sooner. Then I would have gone to grad school, which is what I'm doing now. So, I guess there's not a major difference, it's just that I would have been a lot further ahead if I had gone the other route. Oh well, I learned a lot as an accounting major, but it was sucking my soul.

Oh, I hear you there! I have no soul left, and I blame it on my accounting major too. Can't wait to get the flying done, hopefully that will help somewhat.

Wow, I'm currently studying accounting too and it IS sucking my soul, really, I thought I was the only one, and my classmates don't understand me when I say I want nothing to do with accounting once I got my major  Smile Nice to hear of others who have been through the same.

767-332ER, making your decision is indeed a very hard thing to do, I made mine and while not totally repentant, I do realize that you gotta do something you feel comfortable with, maybe not 100%, but at least a good comprimise between realistic goals and your desires, good luck.

Well, the advice is sound and I appreciate it guys. In response to being disposed to military life, I mean I would love to serve my country and really whoever is President...I would stand behind him/her. It's just also I don't wanna sound too selfish but I really wanted to know what the best option for me, in terms of flight...I am still leaning towards USAF as the training they provide, the way they treat their people and countless of recomendations from servicemen and women, that the USAF is the best branch of the military. I had considered Marines, but the lack of fixed wing options deterred me from them. But anyhow, I really appreciate the advice guys...

I have undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting. If job security is what you're after, accounting is the way to go. Though I haven't practiced as a CPA for almost 6 years now, I still have good friends and colleague in the profession. They tell me that the accounting firms are desparate for people.

Look, the first year as staff sucks but the pay is pretty good, it's almost impossible to get fired, and the job security is amazing because of the demand (everyone I know who worked at Andersen found jobs with a few weeks after the firm collapsed). This being said, the work is often tedious and doesn't offer much opportunity for creative thought until you become a manager.

An accounting degree though does give you a big head start over other business professionals. You'd be surprised how many people can't understand what it takes to make a profit. Look no further than the airline industry.

You should check into the Air National Guard. These units fly the same planes the "real Air Force" does and you get to have your own career on the side.

If you are concerned about earning your wings then the guard is the easiest way to go. The way you become a pilot in the guard is that you apply to a unit (just like applying to college). If you are accepted by the unit then you will fly whatever plane they fly (F-16, F-15 whatever).

This is a lot different than the regualar Air Force which mainly picks its pilots from the Academies and ROTC units.

Yeah, that's what got me into accounting. It is indeed a very stable job. Instead, I chose to be a dirt-poor flight instructor, but my soul is completely intact.
