Germany just won the Handball European Championship by beating the host Slovenia 30-25.

I used to play handball as a kid when I attended an international school in Taiwan. Great sport, although I was really crap at it! Big grin

I don't think anyone in the States knows about handball, though.

Who plays this game apart from the two countries mentioned?

(That's not sarcastic by the way - for once - I'm genuinely curious)

Can someone go into detail about the rules of handball? I'd like to learn more. It's extremely obscure here in the states.

Banko asked:

"Who plays this game apart from the two countries mentioned?"

Here is a list of all the countries that participated in this European Championship. These are all solid teams and will give you some idea where in Europe the sport is played (in quite a few countries, actually):

Where would the sport rank in terms of popularity in these countries?

About the same level as Basketball, if that helps. Way behind Football, Formula 1 and Winter sports, but ahead of women's football  Smile

I remember a friend's high school played it. In the States, if it is known at all, it is called Team Handball to distinguish it from what most Americans think of as handball, which is sort of like Squash only using your hand. http://ushandball.org/

(American) Handball, with a Spalding rubber ball is the unofficial sport of New York City. All you need is a ball and a wall. I was quite good at it as a youth.

The yanks have to have their own strange version of every sport around. They play football with their hands, Squash without racket and racing with ovals instead of race tracks.

Yeah, they won, and you can thank the 2 ref's from the semi final for it. We were robbed in the last few minutes, with a penalty shot being overlooked for once. Oh well, I guess it's our own damn fault, we had 2 men superiority for 1½ minutes, yet it only ended 1-1, we should have gotten at least 2 or 3 goals. Not to mention that our pivot was hit in the head, earning him 20 minutes off while he was getting 3 stiches - and during those 20 minutes we didn't have a dedicated pivot, so we had to go with one of our wings for that.

Oh, and to finish my whining, I would have liked to see Fritz get at least 2 minutes for the gliding tackle he did, during one of our counterattacks. Our wing had a clear shot at the goal at the time.

The only good thing about this, is that we won the bronze medals and that we defeated the Croatians....

CPH-R, you should contact the English guys on here. They have lots of expierence with Germany throwing them out of the semi-final "completly undeserved". Banco & co. can tell you how to get over it, and in no time you'll be 100% sure that Denmark will trash Germany in the next big tournament  Smile

Well, I doubt that we'll play just as good next time (that'll be the world cup if I'm right - we failed to qualify for the olympics), given that one of our main guys up front Klaus Bruun, has just quit playing because he wants more time with his wife (who's playing on the womens national team).

But then again, it could be worse, we could be Sweden  Laugh out loud

Oi!  Smile

"Squash without rackets" is really just another form of Fives, which is a superb sport... I love it!

(but can't find anybody to play with, a familiar story...)

Airsickness and Csavel, watch German TV BEFORE midnight for a change, and you'll still see nudity galore, but I guess the Americans here would faint dead away..as those threads on Janet's breast clearly prove.

For those who speak German: "Saudumm and Gomera", that's what we call scandals such as yours during Superbowl  Big grin

Banco you've just missed a great chance to tell everybody just how great the English team....will be, about 20 years from now...

I know it's only VfB but I like it!
