With the signing of I-Rod, the Tigers' ten-year imitation of the Cleveland Indians of the 60s, 70s and 80s might be coming to an end. How about this new line-up:

Tigers' projected starting lineup

Detroit News staff reports

Here’s a scouting report on the Tigers’ likely Opening Day batting order, compiled by The Detroit News staff. New players are highlighted.

1. ALEX SANCHEZ: CF

2003 stats: Games: 144 Avg: .282 Runs: 58 Stolen bases: 52

* Started 128 games for the Tigers. Stabilized center field after being acquired in a trade with the Brewers. Lacks arm strength but compensates with speed and range.

2. FERNANDO VINA: 2B

2003 stats: Games: 61 Avg: .251 Home runs: 4 RBI: 23

* Replaces Warren Morris. Hindered by injuries, started 58 games for the Cardinals last season. Solid defensively, a nice top-of-the-order hitter and good guy in the clubhouse.

3. IVAN RODRIGUEZ: C

2003 stats: Games: 144 Avg.: .297 Home runs: 16 RBI: 85

* Replaces Brandon Inge. Started 135 games last season with the Marlins. Says he is not a home-run hitter but a “gapper” hitter, as he calls it. So, Comerica Park is made for him.

4. DMITRI YOUNG: DH

2003 stats: Games: 155 Avg: .297 Home runs: 29 RBI: 85

* Started 148 games last season for the Tigers. An excellent hitter who will benefit from a better lineup in ‘04

5. RONDELL WHITE: LF

2003 stats: Games: 137 Avg: .288 Home runs: 22 RBI: 87

* Replaces Craig Monroe. Started 126 games with the Royals and Padres. Adds a steady, veteran bat to the lineup. Injuries have been a problem throughout his career. Doesn’t have a great arm, but he won’t hurt you defensively.

6. BOBBY HIGGINSON: RF

2003 stats: Games: 130 Avg.: .235 Home runs: 14 RBI: 52

* Started 124 games for the Tigers. Still one of their best hitters, but Monroe could fill his spot more often if he struggles.

7. ERIC MUNSON: 3B

2003 stats: Games: 99 Avg .240 Home runs: 18 RBI: 50

* Started 88 games for the Tigers. Injuries derailed what could have been a solid season. With a better lineup, he could have a breakout season.

8. CARLOS PENA: 1B

2003 stats: Games: 131 Avg.: .248 Home runs: 18 RBI: 50

* Started 125 games for the Tigers. Batting further down in the order will help minimize self-induced pressure.

9. CARLOS GUILLEN: SS

2003 stats: Games: 109 Avg.: .276 Home runs: 7 RBI: 52

* Replaces Ramon Santiago. Started 103 games for the Mariners last season. Provides dependable defense and a solid bat. As a switch hitter could could move up to the No. 2 spot in the order.

I wonder what will happen when the Pudge gets to Lakeland, FL. in a couple of weeks and finally meets the Tiger pitching staff:

Mike Maroth (9-21 last year)
Nate Cornejo (6-17)
Jeremy Bonderman (6-19)
Adam Bernero (1-12)

Seriously...I am excited.....for the first time in 10+ years, we may just have something to look forward to come spring time in Detroit (besides the Wings and Pistons). Mike Ilitch has said more than once the last day or two that...this (the signing of IRod) is only the beginning. We will see.

While not being able to come up with something as ingenious as "They still suck" (And I apologize for my lack of creativity). I will say that the Tigers pitching staff will always be the Achilles heel. Until they can get some quality pitchers, this team will be near the bottom of the standings.

I don't even pay that much attention to baseball anymore, but it's obvious that most people in this thread pay even less.

The Tigers have a very good farm system running. Trammell is a decent manager who went thru a season of horror without batting an eye. He coached the whole way through, never giving up.

New park, managment willing to spend some money to get some quality. It's so easy to kick a dog when it's down, you people slay me.

I like the last two posts very much. The Detroit Tigers, a charter American league franchise, are second only to the Yankees in number of A.L. pennants and W.S. appearances. (Look it up.)

Tram is a player's manager, and he is a winner. So are his coaches Kirk Gibson and Lance Parrish. The owner is not through spending. Remember, Ilitch built the Red Wings into a dynasty. The Tiger's GM Dombrowski will pick up at least one (or maybe two) quality pitchers before Spring Training ends.

Yes, a long way to go. But we are finally on our way. Bless you, boys.

Maiznblu_757 - Go play Soccer. You deserve such a thing.

The "new look" Tigers still indeed suck. They won't be picking up any "quality" pitchers anytime soon, and they have a great shot at having another 20 game loser this year. They won't get any more fans to go to the park, which is a shame, but good for me, cuase I'll have no problem walking up and getting Tiger Tickets here at the end of April/Early May.

Gosh KROC, I thought you might throw me a bone (but not the "shaft"). The Tigers will score more runs this year. They will also win more games. And they will win a World Series again before either the Mets or the Red Sox.

Hey Stretch. Slow Down. Sure they will win a World Series before the Red Sox, but before the Mets????? Come on now. And of course they will win more games this year. I mean they did lose 119 last year. Not exactly that tough to improve on that mark.

Come on, lets place a little wager on who wins a Series first, Tigers or Mets.

The Tigers will ALWAYS SUCK!! Have since the 90's. Besides. Next time KROC comes to town, we don't want to have them WINNING!! That would really suck. Personally, I'd like to see the Tigers go up against the Mets.. When KROC is here.

Chris, the Tigers actually play at Shea Stadium this year. Next year ('05) I believe the Mets will play in Detroit. And I do want the Tigers to win. I cheer for them. I follow them, but they will not win a WS before the Mets. GOOD NIGHT NOW!

The Tigers will be a much better team than last year. With Pudge, Young, and White in the middle of the lineup, Vina and Sanchez are going to get a good amount of pitches to hit in front of them, and Higginson, Pena, and Guillen are going to get some good looks at pitches behind them. Pudge will also help the Tigers young pitchers develop into a better unit. And Detroit signed Jason Johnson, who will get a chance to really show his stuff this next year. Al Levine and Esteban Yan will see limited action, but will add veteran presence to the staff. Also, they are playing in a relatively weak division. Not to knock Cleveland, Chicago, KC, or Minnesota, but there are not any Bostons, New Yorks, Anaheims, or Seattles with whom to compete for the division title. Not saying they are going to win it, in fact I highly doubt it, but they have a chance to be in the race for quite a while. And for those of you who think the Tigers' staff still is absolutely awful: we'll trade you our starting five down here in Texas for y'all's starting five! Of course, if anybody just wants to be a good pal and take Chan Ho Park off our hands, we'll be very appreciative Smile

Hey Texan: Thanks. I like the Ballpark in Arlington, mainly because the right field stands are reminiscent of Tiger Stadium.

With all these improvements, the Tigers should move out of the AL Central cellar.....into fourth place.

Here's how I see em as of right now:

1)Royals
2)White Sox
3)Twins
4)Tigers
5)Indians

DeltaSFO - I was still saying the Braves were the NL East team to bet last year. Now though, they have lost just too much without replacing anything. Well, they did ink 53 year old Julio Franco to a one year contract.....
