Try N2mail.com, <http://www.n2mail.com> ..It "let's everyone know what you're n2." The large choices of domains can be just as corny as the slogan, but it's very reliable and I don't get any spam. I think it's possible to have an email address such as "JoeSchmoe@n2aviation.com" or "JohnDoe@n2jets.com"
I can't stand netaddress.com (usa.net).
I just got hotmail again after a 4-year hiatus, so I have to wait and see if it improved any.

I used to use Mail.com (iName), but I got fed up with them because they have something like 6 ads on every screen, plus sometimes popup windows too. This from a company that charges for "premium" features like POP access (get your mail through Outlook Express, Eudora, etc rather than the web page). Now I have my iName address set to simply forward to my account at Gamma Quadrant. Gamma Quadrant is an Internet based BBS that operates using the FirstClass program, web and telnet access is available as well. In addition to email they have several discussion forums as well as free web space. http://www.gammaquad.com.

Hotmail - first one I had, pretty good even with M$ ownership;
Excite - also pretty good; lacks the "done" button;
mail.com - got it as an NBCi member; not too bad but not as fluid;
Netscape.net - AWFUL. I dont recall using this much because 99% of the time it's simply unavailable;
thepretender.com - so you know whatta fan I am ;
planetout.com - incapable of handling pictures. enough said.
I use a Mac, so I also get mac.com email that operates only through email programs on the computer (correct me if i'm wrong!), and it's been great.

I have used everything from AOL to Yahoo. Now I use GMX, which is a European based copany. I hget the benefits of web-based e-mail, and html capabilities, something that Yahoo does not allow. I am quite pleased with my service.

I use yahoo! but it used to beGeocities email with my webpage, and i can use a real email program (outlook express.) I don't think you can do it now, because yahoo bought their system, and i think they only let people who used to have it use it. but, i'd check at geocities now if you have a webpage there. It's great email, and i never have problems with it or get spam on it.
my 2 cents
