I think it's because most people think men have to do cool jobs, and serving drinks and putting a big smile on your face on an airplane is not cool (what they regard as the only duties of F/A's). Therefore it's more regarded as a women's job, and a man doing a women's job is generally viewed as a gay...

Think about humans as hunter-gatherer primitives. Servile jobs were feminine. Take-charge jobs like killing mammoths were masculine. We have not come so far as you might imagine. All cultures, all races, these simple statements usually apply.
When you generalize you run a great risk of being wrong. A single exception will make you "wrong" but generalities are an aid to understanding things.

Well, without wanting to sound too serious cos I did ask to a degree with tongue in cheek......
...it is generally "known" that an unusually high proportion of male flight attendants are gay - of course looking gay does not mean one is gay (and vice versa) - and although this is a generalisation, I know a few BA cabin crew who confirm this to be the case. So no, I don't directly ask when I request for a Coke (tho my friends do get asked/offers - esp from First passengers).
Nevertheless, I am not asking about the accuracy of this well know generalisation, I am asking why it is likely to be the case.

well it has something to do with the fact that in GENERAL (not 100% the case) the male of the species is expected to provide a high income/home/shelter to his wife and family and Flight Attendants simply just don't make that much money. That is why it has always been historically considered a female occupation. Only recently has it become a life long career.
In the beginning they were nurses..then later anyone with the needed basic skills got in and the women would fly for a few years, get married and quit.
Gay men generally do not have this wage pressure so they take jobs according to their desires.
YES I KNOW SOME F/A's make good money (pre-emptive strike) - but they need to work for a decade or more to get to that point!
As for the looks thing..well most male F/A's are gay, sure some act gay and aren't, but that is an exception. As for gay female attendants..i was kinda joking..
