FIFA 2004 is the best selling football game in the world, but i'm having trouble understanding how? I just bought the game and trying to get to grips with the game.
The controls are difficult to get used to, the ball sticks to the players feet like super glue and scoring goals is near impossible. I've also got Pro Evolution Soccer 3 on my PS2, this game is arguably the best football game ever developed (in my opinion at least but a lot of people would agree)

Have you checked the difficulty setting on Fifa 2004? I think they start you Pro now, and yes Pro Evo 3 is without a doubt the best soccer game by far, cant wait for them to get the premier league licences, Fifa will be wiped out then!

I've been playing on semi-pro, but it's still hard. Pro Evo 3 blows FIFA 2004 out of the way completely, once Konami get the licenses for proper teams, it will cement it's place in the history books.
Thinking about giving FIFA 2004 back.

I have it. Its good but the Fifa games have undoubtedly got worse over the years. I went for a sleepover at my friends and we played on Fifa 2002 and i couldn't believe how much better it was. I have 2001 (PC), 2002 (PC), 2003 (PS2) and 2004 (PS2) (and Fifa 95 on Sega ) and 2002 is the best.

I have it too
I have fifa 2000, fifa2001, fifa2002, world cup 2002, fifa 2003 and fifa 2004!!!
the problem is, the only thing I hear is Pro Evolution soccer 3 this, Pro evolution soccer 3 that!!! I have a PC and not PS/2, I couldn' find it for PC!!!!
Is it that good?
Once I started Fifa2004, it felt like I had bought another package of a totally different brand. The controls felt totally different, shooting on goal is totally messed up, goalkeeper has super powers, and most of all, anyone close to you takes the ball in a blow!!! I found the game unplayable for many months before I forgot the previous versions and got used to it. I also had to buy a controller since directional control seemed poorer on a keyboard with fifa2004. As if they used a different engine for all the game, one with many flaws.
Finally, playing with CPU is a mess. At the 90th minute, they play with super powers and the 90th minute lasts forever until they score (unless they are already winning).
The CPU once took two corners, a free kick and a penalty all in the 90th minute until they scored!
After playing it for a while, I systematically beat the CPU at Semi-Pro, and win one in a five matches at Pro. In 2003 I won whole leagues and cups at the World Class level. Plus I could beat my neighboor everyday, he who beats me now on 2004!
Finally, where did the European League go??? What kind of omittence is that...
I was disappointed with 2004. But how do you get past the John Moston and Allan McCoist commentary, team kits, names, stadiums? aren't they important? I imagine Pro Evolution Soccer 3 rather fade without all these.

In terms of gameplay, Pro Evolution 3 wins hands down, passing, shooting, heading, volleying, tackling etc are as close as you'll get to the real thing. On FIFA games the ball control and everything else is weird, shooting on goal is bizzare, it always ends up in the goalkeepers arms. Taking corners is a mystery aswell. Pro Evo 3 is available on the PC also.

Fifa2004 is very frustrating. It's their AI. It is dependant on *your* game. If you do strong moves early in the game, you have a chance of a goal, and if you score, then the AI will be abit 'down', letting you dominate for a while. Otherwise, if you let the AI start strongly, it will score before 10 minutes and the match is definitely gone, because each of your goals will be answered by one.
In any case, if they are losing, the 90th minute is unbeleivable long with super play from AI.
You know in advance when they are going to score: they do 2 or 3 unstoppable volley passes, the attacker runs alone, your defenders are always late and that's it, he scores.
You can't score by shooting close to the keeper, which is ridiculous, you must lob it or pass it by him gently.
It's impossible to win on a penalty shootout.
I mean, whatever, even if I'm not perfect at it yet, at my stage, shouldn't it be at least a bit more enjoyable and realistic instead of a joke?
It is disappointing.
