I went to the Dominican Republic in Jan for $800CND per person, but travel from the US is way cheaper. It was an all inclusive 4-star resort. If you like just to sit on the beach in the warm sun and water, go there. There is nothing like a theme park-if you want that, goto sixflags. I enjoyed it very much.

Vegas can be done for that cheap per person. My combined cost for my trip in April for a flight ATL-LAS-ATL and a hotel room (5 days 4 nights on The Strip) was around $450. Throw in a rental car, and I'm spending a total of close to $600. Plenty of things other than gambling to do in the area; Hoover Dam is about an hour from Vegas, the Grand Canyon is a four and a half hour drive from Vegas.

You say you don't want to go to Tampa, Fl. because you have already been there.....but....what about the Gulf Coast beach areas.....St. Peterburg Beach...Treasure Island....you would fly into Tampa, and then the beach areas are about 45 minutes away. You would need to rent a car.
Or....fly into Orlando...rent a vehicle...and drive to the middle part of the Atlantic Coast....Cocoa Beach has a good assortment of nice hotels and very nice beach areas. The Kennedy Space Center is close by.
You say you want to go in April.....if it is the second week of April, better known as Easter week, you may have problems. Hotels in Florida lower their rates as soon as Easter week ends.
I would agree that New Orleans is a good choice.
The Gulfport/Biloxi area has really grown in the last few years...Casinos...you are still on the Gulf....
Having a smoking section in a restaurant is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool.....
