I'm pretty amused by this.

Last night, the 3rd round in the UEFA cup was played, and my club was playing home against FC Barcelona.

Now prior to the game, FC Barcelona had been absolutely hyped, in that they've managed to win their past 5 games. And in Denmark, the season haven't even started yet (won't start for another 3 weeks). Anyway, most people seemed pretty sure that FC Barcelona would roll us over. The fact that their players are more than 10 times more valuable than our players, seemed to be the nail on the head.

And what happens?

FC Barcelona wins 1-0, after having been handed a freekick just outside the penalty area. The goal itself was impressive, in that Ronaldinho managed to shoot the free kick & score on the rebound.

Anyway, even our 2 substitutes at age 18 & 19, who've never played a game in the league, managed to keep up with the FC Barcelona millionaire players.

So once again: FC Barcelona.. who?

http://www.brondbytifo.dk/gal-20040226-BIF-FCB.asp?mode=2 - the view that greeted the players as they entered the pitch. Cut & paste the adress as it won't work otherwise.

It's no secret that the team is nowhere as competitive as it some years ago. They have let some good players go, and the ones brought in aren't as good. And then, they have also changed coaches several times...

I hope Saviola can get out of there and play somewhere else....

Does anyone know if there are as many dutch players in a Dutch club as there are in Barcelona?

Hello all,

looks like NY Ranger's effect. Team with potential, but never happens.

Sad....

OK, Barça isn't the Barça it used to be some years ago with its Dream Team, but after the terrible last few seasons I've seen playing my club, these last few weeks are really starting to like me again.

Not too many Dutch players during the match against Brondby (Reiziger, Cocu, van Bronckhorst and, as a substitution for Luis Garcia during the 2nd half, Overmars. Matter of the fact is, this Barça still isn't in form yet. Kluivert, Luis Enrique, to name just a few, aren't top-shape yet. Davids cannot play UEFA this year, Puyol isn't totally recovered (hence the horrible face mask).

We still managed to beat Brondby and had far more goal opportunities than Brondby.

AviationMaster:

Barça probably has had so many Dutch players lately because of the recent (Dutch) coaches. There were Cruyff, Louis van Gaal (2x) and now Frank Rijkaard.

Truth is, Dutch players are all over Europe and I believe this is for different reasons: the most obvious one is their quality. Not less important is the fact that Dutch players just can't make the amount of money in the Dutch league as they can in Italy or Spain, to name just a few. This has particularly affected Ajax in recent years. Right now, it is difficult to see Ajax play with more than 2 or 3 Dutch players.

Well after Barca's impressive victory at the Riazor against Depor, I dare say that the glory days of Barca are slowly returning. They have yet to been beaten this year and with Ronaldinhio playing awesome, there is a new found confidence that is now found at Camp Nou. Laporta has done a great job, after a few early teething problems, and now he and Rijkaard have got Barca firing.

They probably not going to win this season, as Real Madrid is too far ahead, but Champions league next season, is looking like a certainty and they will be very active in the transfer market during the summer. So look out for a rejuvenated Barcelona next season!

Schoenorama,
you gotta admit, for a team that haven't played a non-training game for more than 3 months, only losing 1-0 wasn't that bad - even considering that two of our profiles left the pitch in the second half, with one of the replacements being a debutant on the first team! Did you see the game? What did you think of the look of the stadium when the players entered the field - I still think it was worth freezing my rear end off for Big grin

Btw, I saw a bit of the Deportivo/Barca game last night, and damn your players have a hard time leaving the pitch when they're substituted. In Brondby, Ronaldinho first had a hard time realizing that he wore the number 10, then he realized that he'd shoe lases weren't tied, so he decided to tie them on the way out & finally he had to find the referee and shake his hand.
Then last night, when Barca's captain was substituted, he was also slow as hell in getting off the pitch.

Barcelona menager Frank Rijkaard doesn't know how to menage and pick players.Rüştü Reçber was the star goal keeper of Fenerbahçe SK,and world cup bronze winner Turkey squad and selected most valuable players of the world cup and now he is waiting in the sub bench behind a young player whose his career is nowhere near Rüstü.By not choosing him in the first squad his menager is effecting Rüştü's success.A very talented world class keeper making stupid mistakes because non constantly playing alongside with the squad.Although I only watch Barca because I am a big fan of Rüştü Reçber but in reality REAL MADRID rules....

CPH-R:

"Did you see the game? What did you think of the look of the stadium when the players entered the field - I still think it was worth freezing my rear end off for.."

Yes, I did see the game (on TV). I agree a completely filled stadium with the majority of fans wearing their team's colours is very impressive.

"...and damn your players have a hard time leaving the pitch when they're substituted."

Of course, Brondby would NEVER do such a thing.... Come on, man, what are you arguing about. This is done by ALL teams.

"Then last night, when Barca's captain was substituted, he was also slow as hell in getting off the pitch."

I believe his injury had something to do with that. That's why he was changed for someone else.

Wing:

"Frank Rijkaard doesn't know how to menage and pick players.Rustu Reçber was the star goal keeper of Fenerbahçe SK..."

Rustu 'fucked-up" considerably against Celta in his FIRST match for Barcelona, resulting in a 1-1 final score. One can be a star-goal keeper all you like, but when one commits a MAJOR misstake during his debute match for Barcelona, any manager tends to stick to the goalie that show some more confidence.

"By not choosing him in the first squad his menager is effecting Rustu's success"

It's the Team's Success which is important, not some individual player. If Rustu wants to be a successfull individual, he should have chosen some other sport, like Ping-Pong or similar...

"A very talented world class keeper making stupid mistakes because non constantly playing alongside with the squad."

It was his Debute-match, for Chr!st-sake.

"Although I only watch Barca because I am a big fan of Rustu Reçber but in reality REAL MADRID rules...."

Although I already had my suspicions about your knowledge of football in general and Barca in particular, that last phrase really confirms you are ignorant  Wink/being sarcastic

Yeah, but still, I don't mind if he leaves the pitch in a slow-ass tempo, but when he starts pulling that kinds of stunts, it gets a bit annoying

"I believe his injury had something to do with that. That's why he was changed for someone else."

If I remember correct, it also had to do with the fact that he decided to help the guy with the mask put the captains arm-thingie on.
