Can Egging Really Ruin Car Paint?

Well, I went home for break this past week, leaving my car in a parking structure. Well, I had to go shopping a little while ago, and found the right side of my car with a nice, big, dripping egg all over. That little bastards hit it on the window too, somehow allowing tiny shell fragments to build up INSIDE the window as well.

I've heard that eggs can ruin car paint. My car is silver, and I tried rubbing some of it off with water (with great difficulty, the stuff was pretty solid and slippery), and I didn't notice any missing paint (or so I discerned from the barely centimeter I managed to wipe off). Is that true? If so, anything I can do or is my paint pretty much screwed?

I figured I'll take it in after class tomorrow if I have some time to get a professional wash and wax. Haven't washed it since it started to snow, and it's in the 50's now.

I can personally say from experience (I drive a silver car) that you will have no problems with the paint.

It depends on the paint and manufacturer. It can indeed damage the car finish, but in most cases the effect is immediate. In other words, once you remove it, the effect stops. So if there's no apparent damage at that point, then you are OK. Again, this is most cases.

Thanks for the replies,

I went out to the parking deck with a gallon of hot water and an old towel I picked up at the lost and found in my building, and washed it off. I didn't notice any damage or scratches upon intial inspection, but the light was dim. Overall, nothing major thank god.

Thanks again,

Honestly, I have no idea why anyone would do that! I don't think it was just my car. I think they did multiple cars on that floor, because there were shells around the place.

Don't have a girlfriend here yet so I don't think that was it  Smile

I had a friend's car that got egged years ago.
There was no "chemical" damage; fading, staining the paint. However, there was a nasty bullseye pattern of cracks in the paint. So I guess if you do not have that you are OK.

New car finishes are pretty impervious to eggs and such. Bird droppings from those that have eaten certain berries and fruits are more apt to cause staining as are some airborne pollutants high in chemical solids. Most damage is caused by trying to remove these messes without ample irrigation; you did the right thing by using plenty of water. A simple car washing tip; flood the vehicle with lots of clean water before laying into it with the suds and cloth. It really helps reduce top-coat scratching. Regards...Jack

Nothing ruins car paint like a good slice of bologna.

Well, I guess pure acid or an orbital sander would, but bologna is way more convenient.

I heard about people getting a nice circular set of cracks from the impact of the egg. Thankfully, the egg itself impacted my window and not the paint, the egg dripped all over the paint.

The only other thing that really pisses me off is that since it hit the window, one drop of egg made its way down the INSIDE of the window and left a trail of egg that went into the windowbay. Don't know how I'll ever get that out.

If it's warm enough this weekend, I'll drive down to someone's house in the suburbs and detail the car myself. Recommend any type of wax?
