I'm a non-smoker (at least when it comes to tobacco Big grin), but some of my cow-orkers claim that cigars aren't bad for your health as
a) the smoke isn't inhaled (like Clinton use to do  Laugh out loud)
b) there's no nicotine in cigars (I find that hard to believe)

What's the truth here ?

I know a few cigar smokers

For some of them, I would say that the health might not be damaged (which remains to be proved), but the brain is definitely damaged...

My Philosophy teacher told us that Freud died of an awful mouth cancer because he "poimpait le cigare" so I guess it's dangerous.

As far as I know, cigars are even more dangerous than cigarettes.

They sure as hell contain nicotine, but the nicotine isn´t what kills you, it just gets you addicted.

It´s the tar, the carbon monoxide and all the other dirt in the smoke that gives you cancer and the other diseases.

And without any kind of filter in a cigar, you´ll get the full blast of it.

Each Cigar contains about all the chemicals of 4 cigarettes, but if your like me and smoke them maybe a couple times a month then its not really a concern.

What about smoking a pipe instead? It seems like it wouldn't be as harmful as a cigar - you don't get anywhere near the amount of tobacco as in a cigar, your lips never touch it, etc.

As far as I remember, pipes will get you a lower lung cancer rate, but a much higher rate of tongue cancer and related forms. Again, there´s usually no filter in pipes.
There is no "harmless" way of smoking I´m aware of.

Have just done this in Biology soo here goes

The pipes are going to be just as bad - tobacco smokes contains carcinogens in the smoke - which basically get transported around the body in the blood stream from the lungs to every single cell! So the reality is it doesn't matter if you touch the tobacco, because the stuff that kills you still gets around your body.

Another point (from my Biology teacher) is if you extracted all the Nicotine in a typical cigarette and injected it, it would stop your heart and kill you - luckily much of the Nicotine isn't absorbed.

Smoking is just....urgh!

Likewise with smokeless chewing tobacco/snuff. Higher mouth mechanics cancer rates. It appears there are no "safe" tobacco products irrespective of how you use them. That these products are large tax revenue producers probably insures their availability for a long time, though. Regards...Jack

Regular smokers inhale alot more chemicals in a month than a cigar smoker that smokes a cigar or two every month like me. They're not as dangerous I think.

Nicotine is in the tobacco plant right for the get-go right? Meaning its natural in it?
