Snowboarding... Yeah...

I got a chance to get up to the slopes today, spent the day snowboarding at Copper Mountain. I'd have to say that my favorite run is still Andy's Encore, because it is just so long. I ride a Palmer Prophet 158 on Drake bindings, Burton Boots, Boeri helmet, and Scott goggles.

Who else snowboards, what is your favorite area/run, and what do you ride?

I am a skier. When I ski, I ski at Alta because there are no snowboarders allowed. Now, in all fairness, just because one snowboards it does not make them a punk. But it just seems to work out that way.

Not to start a skiers vs. snowboarders flame war, but yesterday when I was boarding, a skier cut me off and caused a very serious and very painful spill. She did a turn right in front of me, throwing powder everywhere up to about my waiste, so I couldn't se a mogul as I tried to turn toes up the mountain. Fell backwards on a 35* incline and slid that way a good 20 feet.

Not very nice of her, although she would have probably done the same thing on a snowboard.

You want a long run try Riva Ridge in Vail! It is the longest run measuring 4 miles! I am a skier who ski's in Vail. I tried to learn how to snowboard but I broke my wrist the second day learning so I gave up. Next time your in the area drive over one more hill and try Vail.

Two rules in aviation, don't hit anything and don't run out of gas, cause if you run out of gas yer gonna hit something.

I really don't have the cash for Vail, got my Copper tickets at a discount. Besides, Andy's Encore is fairly long, Gradual Blue run starting at 12,000 feet and ending at the base around 9500.

Whistler. I'd love to get up there. Just a few more years and I'll make the run north o' the border.

While snowboarders are, unfortunately, a fact of life now, I can never understand why they feel such a strong urge to destroy moguls. Why go into the bumps at all if you are just going to stand sideways and use your board as a snowplow to shave off all the bumps and groom the hill. How is that fun? I've seen boarders in the bumps who do great, turning through and around the moguls, and that's great, no problem. But they are about 2 percent of them.
Alot of this "rivalry" between boarders and skiers would ease if resorts had just one or 2 boardless slopes, where us skiers could get away from "the attitude" for a bit, and we could have decent bumps again. If boarders have their own little areas, why can't skiers?

Also, an observation. If you are coming up behind a skier and they are going to change direction, you can see that before they turn and adjust your path accordingly. Boarders, however, by the nature of how they turn, give no such indication and seem to suddenly zig and zag into your path. I do not say this as a complaint at all, just something I have noticed that can increase the amount of accidents.

One last beef about snowboarders...
I understand that you need to spend most of your day sitting on your ass in the snow. Doesn't look like fun to me, but hey, it's your choice. But do you really NEED to sit side by side all the way across the trail/slope, blocking the whole damn road? The first thing I was told my first time on the slopes is to never stop in the middle of a trail. I know that disregard for any rules is part of board culture, like your backpacks with the speakers, but this habit is just stupid.

OK, one LAST last beef about boarders...
If you are in line for a quad lift, and you are in a group of 4, then for shits sake, get on as 4!! Don't split up at the last moment into 2 groups of 2!! This immediately doubles the time in lift lines you morons! I say, back to the end of the line with ya!!!

In case you are wondering, yes, I have gotten into a fight with a boarder. Knocked over my wife without so much as an oops, much less a sorry.

But some of my best friends are boarders, so....

Uh-oh... A skiers vs snowboarders post...

I'm a snowboarder (Burton Custom 160.5, Burton Custom bindings, Burton Fader boots) and all I can say is: Snowboarders and skiers use a slope differently, their approach to great conditions is different, and those two different opinions are basically eachothers opposite.

Boarders like powder and hate moguls. Skiers like the opposite...

But basically, most things that make either group annoyed by the other are caused by beginners. Beginners are slow, they ride erraticly, they sit around a lot, all that kind of stuff. And that goes for snowboarders AND skiers...
But everybody has been a beginner once, so you have to show some understanding. How often I have been pissed off by skiers, and snowboarders aswell... Lots of times... But we all share the same slopes, so better be a bit more understanding with eachothers needs. The best thing is for a snowboarder to do some skiing and for a skier to do some snowboarding for a change. I'm sure a lot of ignorant remarks and prejudice could be cleared...

About boarders splitting up the group at a 4+ seat lift in 2-2: Excuse me... It's the skiers who generally do that. They are generally afraid of these 'anti-social' boarders that they don't dare sitting in the same seats with boarders... So if 2 boarders and 2 skiers are waiting for a row of seats, only the boarders go, leaving the 2 skiers standing...

Sorry dude, but that's crap. I hate moguls, love powder, and ski.

Ahh, home sweet home...

Alta is for skiers.

I also saw John Kerry snowboarding on tv a few nights ago. It seemed like a political moment for him to be caught on film, but he looked like he wasn't doing so bad...for an old geezer.

Personally, I've never skied or been snowboarding. I like my water liquid, thanks (although I'd love to try it someday). I'm overjoyed that it snowed here in Connecticut two days ago. First snow I've seen in over a year and it's sorta thick! (anything over 2 inches is a serious snowfall to me Big grin )

I guess the splitting up on the lift thing can be a localized behavior. I do most of my skiing at Sunrise Ski Park here in Arizona, USA, and that behavior seems to be the boarding standard there, maybe not so much at other places, though I did see it at Telluride also.

I know getting on and sitting on a lift can be more awkward for a boarder, but take your medicine if you board, that comes along as part of the package.

I actually enjoy riding up with boarders. They tend to be quite entertaining in their conversation!

I started out by skiing, then I switched to snowboard and next year I'll be going back to skiing.

I like snowboarding, especially in powder - but I miss taking a fast ride through a good set of moguls.

I still have one particular ride in mind that I have try again some time: The Aguille Piercee run in Espace Killy (Val d'Isere & Tignes). God, those moguls nearly destroyed my knee, so by the time I arrived at the small village at the base of that run, I was down & out for 30 minutes Big grin

The thing about moguls is that by there very nature aren't meant for snowboards. When you turn on a snowboard, centrifugal force pushes you outward, and because snowboards only have one edge, they are more affected by it. When you are at the bottom of a mogul and it's time to turn, you end up going right over top it and landing on another one in a very precarious position that generally causes your ankles and your ass to hurt like hell. Skiers have less of a problem with this because they have two edges and grip better to the slopes.

I don't really have a problem with skiers, my problem comes when parents take their 5 year olds skiing for the first time and they start out on the blues and the kid is just snowplowing and doing the erratic movements of a beginner. I actually once collided with a young kid skiing like that, luckily we were both turning away from each other and no harm was done, however I didn't just board off, I made sure he was ok before I left.

Happy boarding/skiing
