Hi guys. My wife and I are flying to Italy in a few weeks on a round the world ticket. We have to get to a town about 25kms south of Florence called FIGLINE VALDARNO. We will be flying in from LAX via LHR and by the time we arrive in ROME, it will be late-about 9pm and we NEED to be in this town by the next day and hopefully that night if possible. Unfortunatedly, because of our class fare (o) and the flights from LAX on BA being very very full, this is the earliest we can get there.
Here are my questions:

As we will have about 3 big suitcases (because my wife just CANNOT comprehend the concept of 'light' travel), is it feasible to take the train from Rome to Florence then to Figline Valdarno or would it be easier to just take it to Florence and catch a cab to Figline Valdarno or would it be easier just to drive instead. I've never driven in Italy but alot of people have told me that it's not for the faint-hearted. On the other-hand, we have baggage and I worry about keeping things all together with so many train interchanges.

any advice would be appreciated.

ps: we don't really need the car, as once we get to the town, there will be heaps of relatives and friends with cars.

Long Haul is the only way to go

Having lived in Italy, I think your best bet is to get a rental car and look up the driving directions beforehand on http://www.viamichelin.com.
Trains in Italy are notoriously unreliable, and you never know when a strike can occur. Taxis are expensive and you run the risk of being taken for a ride (pun intended). No offense to the Italians as I love this country and it's easily the best I have ever lived in  Big thumbs up

Hi Qantasclub!

Well, in my opinion the best thing you can do is to spend the first night in Rome and take a train the next morning to Figline Valdarno.

Trip by train from Rome Termini station (main city station) to Figline takes around 2 h and a half. Most of the trains require you to make a change in Florence (but I don't think it's a big deal: just be sure you have enough time to leave the first train and catch the other). I've also seen there is a direct train leaving Rome at 09:14 am (working day) and arriving in Figline Valdarno at 12:27 am.

You can also rent a car: it's a 270 Km (more or less, 2 h and half,
journey time) trip, mostly on motorway, but I'm afraid it's quite expensive, (this is the main concern, in my opinion, driving in Italy is not so bad  Smile ) and you'll safe no time, compared to train. On the other hand you don't need to pay an hotel room in Rome. Be careful because I highly doubt there are any rent-a-car in Figline, so you have to leave it in Florence or in Rome on your way back to FCO.

This the official Italian Railways site, where you can check time and destinations (and book some of them too):

And this is a route planner to find the best way to reach Figline by car (just enter Rome Fiumicino or Termini in the departure field and Figline Valdarno in the destination field)

That's all, if you need any other information feel free to ask me (don't worry about train strikes, they are known days before so, if you want, I'll tell you before you leave if you will be so unlucky!)
