Give me a damn break. This money/attention/luxury loving useless figurehead visiting the 'slums' of Toronto. For what? Feeling a little guilty about her
to-date CAD$41 million spending spree while Governor-General? Another prime example of flagrant waste on Parliament Hill.

Regent Park Hosts Clarkson (The naive fools. As if she truly gives a s**t)
Envoy tours inner-city area

Young people get special attention (For a minute. After she's back in her
limo....out of sight, out of mind, and it's on to the Four Seasons for
lunch?).

DEBRA BLACK
STAFF REPORTER

Residents of long-troubled Regent Park gave the straight goods on their neighbourhood to Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson yesterday, proving their community isn't the deadly concrete jungle it's been portrayed as so often.

As Clarkson walked along the sidewalk that cuts through the three-storey apartment buildings on Dundas St. E., an unexpected hello drew her attention to a ground-floor apartment. A girl was calling out to her from behind a barred window.

Clarkson, who was accompanied on the informal tour by her husband, John Ralston Saul, turned aside for a chat with the little girl.

Then it was on to another of the six stops she made during the day.

For Jane Syvret, 14, a volunteer with a community newspaper and the radio station Catch Da Flava, Clarkson's visit was nothing short of "cool."

"This is the first time someone who is important, at that level, has come to Regent Park and looked around. It's not a bad place. We have good people in Regent Park, not just bad people or criminals, or people who are in gangs and stuff."

"It's very special, very important," said Justin Goldenthal, an on-air volunteer at Catch Da Flava. Clarkson and Ralston Saul seemed to enjoy the sights and sounds of the community east of the downtown, stopping to look at scores of tulips coming up in a garden on Dundas St. E.

She began the day with breakfast at the Sip and Bite Restaurant on Parliament St., dining with five students from the Pathways to Education mentoring and tutoring program.

"We talked about family and our backgrounds and how we came to Canada," said Yang Shen, 16, a Grade 11 student at Jarvis Collegiate Institute, who goes to Pathways and was one of Clarkson's guides for the day.

"I told her I wanted to be a doctor or a pharmacist. She said to me: `School can be hard, you have to study, but you have to take time for yourself. It can't always be books, books, books.'"

Clarkson told the crowd at a photo gallery, "Coming here and meeting all of you means I get a view of this community from the inside out," adding she was impressed both with what she saw and plans for the area's revitalization.

Her official visit to Toronto continues today with a trip to Lester B. Pearson Collegiate Institute, followed by lunch at the Malvern Town Centre and a discussion with young people.

Tomorrow, Clarkson will swear in 15 new citizens and present her Caring Canadian Awards at Jarvis Collegiate.

*Ah! So THAT'S what this broad does to earn her salary (and generous pension). I suppose after her gig at Jarvis Collegiate, spa treatments in
Banff via a government jet will be in order. Go ahead, honey, you DESERVE it.

I agree. What a horrendous cow. Not to mention her regal hard-left husband John Ralston Saul I.

Why not eliminate her department and provide $41M in refunds to all Cdns?

You may agree that the position exists or that it stands for anything, but attacking her personally is un-called for .. is there really a need to call her a "braod" and a "cow"??

When I'm paying her salary and she is exceeding flagrantly her allocated budget, I will comment as I see fit.

She is nothing but a silver-spooned socialist feeding at the taxpayer's trough of plenty. Perhaps pig fits better than cow.

Yyz717 - You are a person who has championed the monarchy in Canada before and so understands the way the Canadian Federation works.

What possible alternative is there to not having a Governor General? If you eliminate her department how can she act as the final constitutional defender?

I really don't understand how the Canadian government would be structured without a Governor General unless you became a republic and had a Head of State/Head of Government figure like the President in the US.

My problem is wth the CURRENT GG, not the position in general. She has greatly overspent her budget and increased the role from her predecessors. There was no mandate to do this.

Two primary ways:
1. She has greatly increased the spending associated with the GG department, largely on unnecessary foreign trips at taxpayer expense.
2. She has politicized the position by speaking loudly and frequently with socialist & anti-American speeches and rhetoric that has diminished the role to nothing more than an unelected left-wing appointment at-large.

My criticism of this left-leaning urban gliterati posing as GG has nothing to do with my opinion on our constitutional monarchy.

1. Something that received heavy media attention, not that it was right, but simply because it was brought to the public spotlight lots of people have joined the band wagon to be Anti-Adrienne .... although noble in an attempt to bash her, it would be easy to find several things that she has done good that has gained media attention, BUT since the particular incident in question is negative it is easy to bash and slander her for it without second thought ... I guess that it is alright.  Insane

2. She has spoken public criticizing things I disagree with, not necessarily wrong, but since I don't agree with her she is wrong and thus it is OK to call her a cow or a pig. Simply a question of my opinion being trump over her's and thus she is OBVIOULSLY wrong.  Insane

"My criticism of this left-leaning ....." - See #2 - she disagrees with my views, thus she is attomatically wrong and bad ...

Give me a break.  Insane

Well as has been seen in Australia - if you put enough pressure on Paul Martin - he may well request that the Clarkson ask the Queen to end her commission as GG.

In my view, the Governor General should be a figure that stands as the ultimate constitutional defender, promoting ideals held by all Canadians in a non-political way.

I agree with Yyz717 completely. There is nothing "wrong", per se, with the
Govenor-General position, and utilized correctly and efficiently, it has the potential to be quite beneficial for Canada and its image.

But....people....please! Adrienne Clarkson has made a complete mockery of this coveted positon, and has shamelessly used OUR tax dollars to supplement her ego and extravagant lifestyle to no end. I had high hopes for Ms. Clarkson when she assumed the title of Govenor-General. I had thought her
attributes of intelligence, experience and refinement would serve Canada well.
I, along with many other Canadians, were invariably dissapointed.

And as for that bloody husband of hers.........God.

One thing I'll say about former Govenor-General Hilary Weston, this woman raised literally millions of dollars for worthwhile charities.
