City of New Orleans train back on track
Lines shut two days after crash in Miss.
Saturday April 10, 2004
Amtrak service on the City of New Orleans train between Chicago and New Orleans resumed Thursday, ending a temporary resort to buses for a portion of the trip after a train derailed in rural Mississippi.
The crash, in a river bottomland just north of Jackson, shut down the lines from Tuesday about 7 p.m. until late Thursday, an Amtrak spokeswoman in Washington said.
The first train to pass through the site late Thursday was a southbound City of New Orleans train, the spokeswoman said. The first train heading north out of New Orleans cleared the area Friday afternoon.
While the trains are running, Amtrak said they probably won't be on time. Because of the crash, trains are required to move at reduced speeds through that area.
The cause of Tuesday's derailment remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, which said a final report is likely to take up to 18 months
