Does ABS Work Even If You're Driving "reverse"

This is my doubt. When you're driving "reverse", does the ABS work if you suddendly press your foot on the brake?

Yes, as brakes are not affected nor react differently with the wheel turning one way or the other.

What's your definition of "reverse?" I know of forward and reverse, but the whole "reverse" thing with the quotes confuses me.

The ABS sensors I have on my car, do not determine which way the wheel is spinning, just that the wheels are, or are not spinning.

It depends on the way your car is set up.

On my last car I had disconnected the back ABS sensors, so only the front wheels had ABS sensors, since most of the braking action is performed by the front wheels.

In theory if I was travelling at a resonably high speed in reverse, and jumped on the brake pedal the back wheels could have locked up because of the shift in weight distribution.

But I would expect that in most unmodified cars ABS would work equally well in forward and reverse.

I confirm it does also work in reverse, which means I can't do 180° reverse spins with my 300€ ABS-equipped 1989 BX GTI.

why would anyone disconnect the rear abs sensors?
you have the slightest clue what happens if your rear wheels block while the front still turn? you will enter a severe spin 95% of the time with all the unforseeable consequences. it is similar to a rear tire exploding, you car will immediately start to spin, while a front tire going off will not cause such effects.

Just disconnect it, it's essential if you want to go round corners sideways - just give the middle pedal a quick jab as you enter the corner to unload the rear end and give it a fistful of opposite lock, it's almost erotic......

Simple, they were hindering my enjoyment of driving!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Unsurprisingly, being a semi-professional (and fairly successful) rally and track driver I know exactly what happens if the rear wheels lock up while the front ones don't - I do exactly that every other weekend to get that last tenth of a second out of an otherwise manic rally stage. It's otherwise known as a handbrake turn!

Bollocks! An untrained, run of the mill driver who knows nothing about handling a car in a spin might get into a spin 50% of the time - but I've been on so many advanced handling courses I can do it in my sleep - I do several sessions every year on a skid-pan, and every year I have to prove to a qualified examiner that I can do it in order to get my competition licence renewed, so I reckon I just might no what I'm doing! The consequences are certainly not "unforseeable"!!!

Total Rubbish! It's ABSOLOUTELY NOTHING like a rear tire blowout!

And apart from that, the car will not immediately start to "spin" with a rear tire blowout, it will in fact enter an uncoordinated slide and start snaking down the road, it will only start to spin if YOU let it! Simply letting go of the wheel and hoping for the best is NOT the way to deal with such situations - some basic common sense will go a long way in that situation.

Last October I was competing in a sports-hatch race at Donnington Park, and on the straight at 115mph (flat out) I had a rear left tire blowout - funnily enough the car did not enter an uncontrollable spin, it simply started to slide and a bit of skill got it onto the grass to bleed off the speed and a slow drive back to the pits for a new rim and tire and I rejoined the race for the last 6 laps.

Maybe in future you should try to make sure that the person you are trying to lecture about something you know nothing about is as ignorant as you - in Scotland we have a saying for what you just tried to do, it's called trying to teach your granny how to suck eggs!  Laugh out loud

It's sad that you didn't get any further in your motorsport career, we are two of the gifted few who get to experience the thrill of competitive motorsport.

It's certainly a struggle financially. I was lucky in that I managed to get (albeit limited) sponsorship deals from a local radio station and a local car dealer, and along with whatever prize money I could lay my hands on and my own investment of time and money I have so far managed to keep racing for 5 years now, I just about cover my costs every year.

Like you my financial resources have reached their peak though, I simply cannot get the finance to move up to a bigger championship. I have no hope of making a career out of it at this stage anyway, when I first started racing cars at 16 (I had raced karts for 8 years before) I so badly wanted to make it into touring cars or DTM racing, but there are too many young teenagers out there who have the financial resources of a small bank and are able to combine this with a natural talent. It's a make or break world in motorsport, especially at the lower end.

I think my motorsport future is in teaching other people how to race, for the past two years as well as racing my own car I've been teaching classes during the summer on race driving both as part of organised courses for kids (well, teenagers) and also at track days. Apart from that I am often asked now to guest drive other people's cars in charity events, which I really enjoy.

You are so right about the blown tire thingy, that happened to me on an open road with a old Citroen BX (not my current one). In that case you HOLD ON to the wheel, you don't let go of it The only outcome was that I had to change a wheel on the roadside in street clothing

I always keep a pair of overalls in the boot just in case, I've been caught out too many times before!  Laugh out loud

The one thing I most remember about my racing days is threshold braking - pretty useful, too.
