Mega MAN Meet - Official Thread (part 2)
User currently offlinePe@rson From United Kingdom, joined Jan 2001, 19188 posts, RR: 52
Posted (10 years 3 months 1 day 3 hours ago) and read 8636 times:

Hi folks,

Over the past week or so, I have communicated and negotiated with the tour people at MAN concerning the required tours as stated in part 1 of the Mega MAN Meet thread. While I initially got permission from the manager, he has now said that they are not possible, primarily due to staff not working on those days. Typical. I asked whether it would be possible to have a tour of the fire station area, but, alas, we cannot: the police are doing something there on the Saturday and they don’t like tours on Sundays. Accordingly, we cannot have any of the tours stated in part 1. I am obviously truly sorry about this, but I have spent quite a while trying to make it all possible – and, I must say, they did too. Still, we’ll get up close and personal to the Concorde, Avro, DC-10 and hopefully the Trident, VC-10 and Vulcan (the latter two are due to be there by then).

Here is the revised plan:

1) Meet at 0930 (if not possible, please state your ETA in this thread) at the car park spectators' area (where there’s a good view of the movements) and proceed to the excellent visitors’ area (visit http://www.manchesterairport.co.uk/web.nsf/Content/ViewingPark) near the runways (by public bus). Spend the day there watching the movements, while sunning ourselves;

2) 2) Go to the seemingly brilliantly located pub (The Airport Hotel; visit www.airporthotel.freeserve.co.uk) about 1700 (5pm) for a BBQ (the cost per person will be a maximum of £2.50; however, I envisage a lower price per person. I do not yet know what it will include, but I will naturally let you know ASAP) and take advantage of the evening sun and warmth. If you require vegetarian food, please let me know. We can watch the movements from where the BBQ will be held:

"Our large beer garden, about the size of half a football pitch to the rear, over-looks the runway which is less than 50 feet away." !!!!!

I stayed at this place a week or so ago, and can confirm its excellence and its convenience. If they’re landing and departing on 24R, it’s absolutely fantastic – and the planes are close enough to easily see their registrations by mere eyesight.

Naturally we can drink copious amounts of alcoholic beverages (or as little as you want (good idea, MYT! ) or none) during the evening. If you do or do not want a meal, please reply to this thread.

3) Proceed to the hotel for the night. Annoyingly, the group rate at the very expensive SAS Radission is nothing much at all, so I have decided that it would be best to stay at the well-located (3 min. walk to both terminal 1 and 3) Bewleys (visit www.bewleyshotels.com) which is much better value (£59 for a twin-bedded room, so £29.50 each). If, however, you really want to stay at the SAS, you will have to pay the normal nightly rate. Please book at whichever you want ASAP. Once booked, please copy and paste the long form and put name of the hotel you'll be staying and the person with whom you'll be sharing next to your name.

If you do or do not require accommodation, please reply to this thread.

4) Meet at the car park viewing area about 8am (or earlier or later as you wish), before returning to the viewing area or returning to the excellent Airport Hotel (depending on the active runway). Or, if you prefer, you may stay on level 13 of the car park.

Don’t forget there’s the opportunity to have a once-in-a-lifetime trip on a commercial airliner; visit http://www.airliners.net/discussions/non_aviation/read.main/535720/ It is looking as though this might not go ahead, but if we can generate more people……….

The following is a list of attendees so far, and what they do and do not want. If you now don't wish to come because of the impossibility of having the tours, please delete your name as necessary. If you don't, I'll assume you still do wish to come so will alter the list.

Sounds like a good deal, EZY! I would have taken you up, but, alas, I already have a room. Still, there's bound to be other takers - especially at that price.

Hi everyone,
My mates at uni have booked us on a holiday to Newquay starting on 10th July, which means unfortunately I'm now unable to make the MAN meet. Shame, I was really looking forward to it - hope there's a "next time" to look forward to. Hope you all have a great time.

I'll be flying Continental unless the loads are prohibitive. If that turns out to be the case, I'll just see where else in the network I can get to, and then just travel offline to MAN. I expect that the loads will be ok.

Why did Pe@rson choose Manchester, isn't there more traffic to see at LHR, or was it because LHR was done last time.
Why did you choose the 10/11 July, the Grand Prix at Silverstone is on that weekend.
I have been checking airfares, It is so expensive to get there, over $3,400 that is from www.qantas.com.au, Emirates was a little cheaper at AUD$2,600
Can you guarantee that the weather is going to be warm and sunny.

MAN was being talked about even before LHR. MAN is much more spotter-friendly, and LHR is a long way to come for all the northern people.

Why did you choose the 10/11 July, the Grand Prix at Silverstone is on that weekend.

There would have been a problem on just about any weekend in the summer. This date misses most of the aviation-related events. I'll be flying so wont get caught in any of the silverstone traffic.

Can you guarantee that the weather is going to be warm and sunny.

Never. No way. You can't even reliably predict it the day before.

It's a long way to come from Australia for just one weekend!
