Is A Six Or Eight Pound Splitting Maul Better

Well, which one do you prefer.

Have some wood, mostly black spruce and alder, some birch that eventually I am going to split, right now I am still cutting it into rounds.

Anyway which one of those maul sizes do you think would work better for my particular woods?

I am thinking about getting the six pound maul and then a heavier sledgehammer and wedge for heavy work. I think I can get a better swing with the lighter weight.

Any thoughts are much appreciated.

And just how many A-net members do you think know what tou're talking about?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

On easy rounds, the 6 lb is better. Anything knotty or hard, you are, as you know, stuck with the sledge and wedge.

Have fun!

What are you and I the only ones that have ever had to split firewood?

It's kind of sad when you think of it.

I have both 6 and 8 down on the farm. I think I've only used the 8 a couple of times. The 6 works quite well for my (mostly) cedar. Diameter of logs makes a difference as well as wood species. Regards...Jack

Why do I have such a problem with spelling on my home computer?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I suspect L-188, that there are a few here, Cptkrell is one, who know what it is. Living where I am now, splitting wood is an unknown science. I think very few of my neighbors could tell the difference between a maul and an axe. They'd probably try to chop down a standing mesquite with the maul. That would be fun to watch though.

Edit: I resolve to use spell check once in a while.
