Don't read this if you haven't seen it and don't want to know details about it.


I had heard this was such a great powerful movie and I was deeply disappointed. I thought it was full of cliche`s and pretty sexist. First of all the killers , they (of course) must share a homosexual experience,and they are playing a first person shooter game on the computer. It seemed to be far too reminiscent of pat theories about causes of Columbine. Also, there is not a sympathetic female character in there. They show two boys other than the killers: the first is the kid who helps his father when he's drunk, and the second is the photographer. Both of these are pretty sympathetic, polite, friendly, self-actualized, and mature. The girls consist of nerd and the bitches. I felt sorry for the first, but she was just portrayed as wimp. The three bitches who (of course) make themselves vomit after eating lunch, and bitch about everyone around them were simply crudely drawn caricatures of the cheer leader crowd. I was thinking "am I watching Heathers?" Oh no, Heathers had the self-consciousness to laugh at itself about this, and not treat it like a documentary.

I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Specifically, why were the first two boys so much more balanced representations of people than the girls or the killers? If the cliche`s were intentional, why weren't the photographer and surfer just as cliche`d?
