Does Anybody Else Think This Is Strange?

I was recently watching my VHS video copy of the great 1970 pioneering disaster movie, "Airport", when something kind of odd struck me.......The package for the film claims the movie received a "G" rating!! This to me seems almost unbelievable. While, true, the film does not contain any nudity or major gore, it does depict several adult situations that I would imagine every parent of young children would prefer their kids not see.
Count 'em.....You've got 3 examples of adultery being depicted, a bomb being brought on board a jetliner and ultimately exploding in mid-air, a severely wounded flight attendant shown, and several expletives like 'damn' and 'hell' peppered throughout the script. (Not to mention Helen Hayes' illegal stowaway activities, or the suggestion of abortion spoken by one of the airline's Captains.)
Don't get me wrong, however, I LOVE this movie. It's my favorite airplane flick. But I think the rating for it should at the least be a "PG".
What do you think? Has anyone else who owns this video been perplexed by this uncharacteristically lenient rating?
Is it possible the movie was actually rated "PG" (or "GP" possibly in the early '70s) for its theatrical release, and then re-rated for later video release?

Trivia: For fellow fans of this film, can anyone tell me the 3 individuals who are the "adulterers" in the movie? ..... And how much does a Boeing 707 cost in 1970, according to a pilot in the film? (A drop in the bucket by today's standards.)

If we hide reality from our kids, they won't be smart. Ratings are pointless. If I am ever crazy enough to have kids  Nuts I won't hide reality from them.

Money does not bring you happiness. But it's better to cry in your own private limo than on a cold bus stop.

Hmmm... Would it be either Jean Seberg Tanya Livingston, Maureen Stapleton Mrs. Guerrero or Jacqueline Bissett Gwen Meighen?
I have all 4 'Airport' movies and that's the one I watch the least. I like Airport '77 the best. Big grin

I am not at all perplexed by the rating. Most kids would fall asleep watching this movie anyway. It's not the most exciting of the 4.

BTW, I have the 'Airport' soundtrack on Lp and Airport '75 on 8track.  Smokin cool
The music is great!  Smile

Oh no! Inez Guerrero unfaithful to D.O.? No way! She couldn't.
Superfly was 0-for-3. But, however, I'm going on the assumption that Gwen & Tanya are unmarried. This is really never discerned. If they are wed, then we have 5 committing adultery here.....could be a cinematic record!
The adulterers in this "G"-rated family fare are......Mel Bakersfeld (Burt Lancaster), Vernon Demarest (Dean Martin), and Mrs. Bakersfeld (Dana Wynter). What a b--ch she was in this movie.
Superfly......I agree with you on the music. Great! I once had an audio cassette with the Airport 1975 soundtrack, including the ever-so-famous track "Murdock Makes It"!!  Smile
How can you find the original Airport the least interesting of the 4 films?
Can you possibly find ANY redeeming qualities in the last disaster entry (in more ways than one)....Airport '79--Concorde? I found it difficult to watch that one all the way through. If not for Joe Patroni, it's totally unwatchable.

The original is great also because of the time it was made....just before the Jumbos entered service. Remember Bakersfeld's line ...... "What are we going to do about these Jumbos, that seat 500 passengers? And how are we going to get the people to and from the airport?"
Bakersfeld RULES!! He's also a pretty cool ladies' man.....and smart for dumping that bitch for Jean Seberg! : Smile

An-225 is actualy in agreement with my opinion on hiding reality from kids

Then you have to remember that this movice came out way way before the PG-13 rating system came out. The ratings tend to change meaning over time too. Not always for the better. IMHO.

The adulterers where Mr and Mrs Bakersfeld and Capt. Demerest. It is kind of interesting that they are all in the same family.

Your probably right!
I am a little to embarassed to admit that it was me who falls asleep everytime I watch this movie. Embarrassment
I love the 707, just read my profile!
The title 'Airport', I just can't help but associate that with Airport '77 which was a disaster film.
The first Airport was a drama (IMO).
Airport '79 was a joke!
JJ from Good Times playing the saxophone on the Concorde?
Was this supposed to be a comedy, political, disaster or drama movie?

Airport '75 was great also!  Big thumbs up

You can find the soundtrack at most used record stores.
