Last night after the annual fireworks in Detroit at the Detroit River, someone opened fire into the crowd. Apparently he and someone else were having an argument and this is how he was trying to settle it. Nine were wounded.
Sick.. Only in Detroit.. Turning an annual celebration into crap like this.

If guns were banned (as they are across the river from Detroit in Canada), these 9 people would not have been shot. They would be healthy and happy today, instead of injured and traumatized, perhaps for life.
Ban the gun. Outlaw the NRA. Freedom from fear of gunshot is the ultimate freedom.
Panam, TWA, Ansett, Eastern.......AC next? Might be good for Canada.

LHMark- Pistons??!?!!? Who cares about the pistons!!! LOL. I was in florida when they won, and didn't hear anything about it till after I was back. Heck. There seemed to be no after-party or anything. If it was the Red Wings, the partyy would STILL be going on!
Learpilot- Who is Jimmy Kimmel?

I am sure the person doing the shooting was a great, law-abiding citizen and if guns were ever rounded up he would have run right down to the drop off point and handed over his gun. Damn guns, making people shoot each other.
Crap like this happens in Detroit all the time, since it is a crime filled cess pool. I am surprised this once incident made national news, the better answer would be to get the city to fall into lake Michigan.

I agree 100%.
This is why, no matter what the event, I will never take my family to this city. The city officials, with their typical head in the sand attitude, will attempt to bury this as an isolated incident.
Speaking of head in the sand, here is a non related issue....Did anyone know that rather than addressing the issue of fixing abandoned buildings in downtown Detroit, they are planning to wrap those buildings with advertising for the 2006 Superbowl, so they won't be such an eyesore.
Keep fiddling Kwame, your city is burning
BTW.....Geographically speaking, it would make more sense to have the city fall into Lake Erie!

The other day, after I got home from TPA, I heard Kwame on the radio with some DJ or someone. Kwame was announced as "We have the mayor of the NBA Champions, the Detroit Pistons, on with us."
That's wrong. The Pistons don't play in Detriot at all!! They play in Auburn Hills!!
Also, I, too wish that the city of Detroit would just be wiped.. (along with Pontiac) and started fresh. They're just too Ghetto anymore..

It's horrible what happened but I think it's unfair to judge the whole event by what happened. Most of the million or so people watched the fireworks display but the whole event was tarnished by one crazy, horrible individual.
The bad thing for the city was that the headlines went from this: to this: All of the effort and work of those who planned something good went down the drain because of some horrible person.

For the record, I watched the fireworks from the comfort of my home in Crapchester, over the internet (http://www.clickondetroit.com) while talking to a friend in D-Town. Best part, nobody tried to shoot me, stab me, jack my car, or anything else. Might be the way to go from now on.

This was the Marshall Field's-Target International Freedom Festival (yearly)and had nothing to do with the Pistons championship.
I will say, from a suburb standpoint, that the mayor needs to go along with the rest of his family that is in office.

Aw, come on!! They're been working hard at cleaning up Lake Erie and you want to go and do something like that??
It is so sad to see stuff like that happening in what used to be such a great city. I was born and raised there and remember when it was a vibrant and fun place to live.

Airlinelover,
Jimmy Kimmel is the guy who used to host "The Man Show" when it sucked less than it does now. He now hosts a late night talk show that's on ABC, I think. A couple of weeks ago, he made the comment "They're going to burn the city of Detroit down if the Pistons win, and it's not worth it." His show was yanked the next night, and he issued an "apology" the night after. Apparantly sense of humor is lacking around network tv as much as it is around here.
And yes, I know, they didn't burn down Detroit. Nevertheless, there was the opportunity for a jab against Detoilet.

oops my bad... I just woke up when I wrote that, and its too late to edit the post. Lake Erie would be better anyway, it is less conducive to sustaining any kind of life.

Its sad to see the city I was born in held in such regard. True, I live in the safe (read: white) suburbs, and am relatively isolated from the city, but it's still sad to see this happening to a city that was a once proud and mighty place. I am incredibly angry that this happened.
The incident yesterday was an example of one (possibly two), ignorant, probably poverty stricken (or near it), f*ck-up's who have no sort of proper education whatsoever. I am SO angry and tempted to use race to explain this and I probably could, but I wont. Let me just say that 90-something percent of Detroit proper is black and nothing like this ever happened when 90-something percent of Detroit proper was white.
Yes, city government has their heads in their asses, they always have. If you want to locate your company in the City of Detroit (who desperately needs tax revenue), you have to go in front of the city council and Sharon McPhail, and tell her how many black people you'll be hiring. Not to mention the shenanigans that go on there anyways (like McPhail thinking theres someone trying to electrocute her to death in her office). Yes, Mayor "Hip Hop" Kwame and his diamond earring just fires city employees who get too close to embarassing scandals that involve him. Yes folks, it's rotten to the core. Run some politicians who know what theyre doing? No way, It'll never happen. They'll be slandered from here to Windsor and back by the political machine. That and the 990,000 people who vote in the Detroit Mayoral election are too stupid to make an intelligent choice anyway.
My Birth Certificate says "City of Detroit" on it, and boy right now, I am ashamed that it does.
EDIT: Just wanted to add that suburbanites and their dollars will stay away from Detroit in droves now. Now everybody is in that "typical Detroit bullshit" mood. Why should I go downtown when I can do everything I could do down there in Livonia, Royal Oak, West Bloomfield, Birmingham, Troy, Northville, or Novi?

In today's Detroit Free Press, in addition to the coverage of the fireworks shootings, there was another article on just how well the City of Detroit is doing....the city lost another 40,000 residents during the last three years, the biggest population loss during that period for all cities with at least 100,000 residents. The population of Detroit is now estimated at 911,000....at it's peak, in the '60s, before the 1967 riots, Detroit had a population of 1,670,000.

I chose (again) not to join the 1 million estimated fireworks revelers. I don't think I've been downtown for the event in almost a dozen years. I perceive exposure to too much other shit is quite a bit higher downtown than, say about a million maybe turning out for the Woodward Dream Cruise from the Detroit City limit to the Pontiac City limit along drag-racing famous Woodward Ave. Funny thing, though; my cop buddies tell me there are more serious "incidents" during the latter. I guess if there were no incidents at all during the fireworks, some folks would have been disappointed because there was no typical excuse to "Detroit-bash". Let's see....one goofball out of one million during a city-wide party. Not bad, I'd say. I hope none of you folks so judgemental aren't soccer fans
Anyhoo, the above is not to try and 'smooth out' the incident; I just wanted to offer a different perspective on perspectives, so to speak. Hey, I remember when the area was pretty damn nice, but it seems to have gotten on greased rails downward, and some of you may have noticed my previous mentionings that I'm bailing out shortly for warmer climes (and maybe less crimes?) a bit further down south. I'll miss some good folks I've met, but will in no way miss the city of Detroit.
BTW, again, for the geographically challenged, Chicago is the 'big city' on Lake Michigan (a Great Lake). Detroit and Windsor are on the Detroit River between Lake St Clair to the north (NOT a Great Lake) to Lake Erie to the south (a Great Lake). Regards...Jack

"Ban the gun." Well, guns of the type used for this public shooting ARE banned
unless you have a special permit, license, are a legitimate law enforcement agent, etc. "Bad boys" will still get their weapons of choice.
Drunk driving is banned, rape is banned, murder by hatchet is banned, hey...embarrassing a prisoner by covering his head with girl's underwear is banned. But you know shit still happens.
The biggest problem in Detroit is the PEOPLE, not the machinery.Regards...Jack
