I just saw another advertisement on TV for low carb this and low carb that. Is anyone else getting tired of hearing about this diet? It's nice to see Americans becoming more health conscious but, God. Sure your loosing inches but is it really worth the damage your doing to the rest of your body?

I agree. The problem with this diet is that nobody understands the science behind it. I hear that the diet says to go low-carb at first and then slowly increase, but limit.

The problem is that most people think that you can stop eating carbs for as long as you want. What they don't know is that the brain NEEDS carbs to work. Plus, what should be limited are simple sugars...NOT complex carbs like those in whole wheat.

I wish the media would do a better job educating people about this diet. It's idiotic fads like these which have already caused people to get angioplasties because they ate too much fat and cholesterol.

But like all fads in this country, this will eventually be over. Until then, we'll have to put up with low-carb bread  Insane.

It is a fad like clear pepsi.. its gonna be gone in a few months then life will be back to normal... the best way to lose weight is still to get off the damned couch and do something with your time.

THEY make CLEAR pepsi?!?!

Anyway... I'm on a diet, but I think for myself, I make sure I don't get too much of one thing and not enough of another, you still have to keep your body balanced.

Don't you remember Crystal Pepsi. It came out in 1994 or so. I remember seeing the superbowl ads when the Cowboys played the Bills.

We talked about Pepsi Clear in my marketing class today... (anyone remember the fad about "New" Coke?..) and someone said they still market it in California? Is that true?

Anyway... it's all about eating healthy and keeping the body fit via exercising.

At the firm I work at, one of the partners is on Atkins. He's lost something like 40 pounds, but he doesn't exercise. Not using the full potential there. His wife's on it as well and she looks great. So who knows?

Unfortunatley, I think it here to stay until something catastrophic changes.

It's not a fad...it's been around for over 30 years--largely in it's original form (Dr. Atkin's Diet Revolution--in what, 1976 or something?). That's a whole generation of 'fad.'

Most food manufacturers would not spend 100's of millions if it would only last 'a few months'

Pesonally, it seems a bit unbalanced...but has worked for some...

Blah... Atkins is just some crap for the U.S. beef industry to recover from the Mad Cow scare.

Well I have figured out why Adkins never licensed his name for any of these products. To avoid the fad mentality that has occurred.

That is why licensing his name as a brand has only happened since his death.

Atkins works. Unfortunately, the rapid weight loss that many experience can be easily recovered quite rapidly unless you follow the diet and the additional steps to stabilizing your diet quite religiously...

Of course you will need excercise too. But diet or excercise alone will not help you maintain your healthy weight.

Well there are two types of Adkins dieters, the ones that read about it in Parade or some other housewife rag, and take it to mean that they eat only meat and eggs.

Then there are the ones that go out and actually read the book.

Guess which ones will be more successful.

Perhaps. But it has only become so popular in the last year.

Again...Atkins does have the science behind it. It can work, only if people took the time to understand it. Again, those people you hear about will eat a greasy burger patty but wouldn't touch an apple.

I personally advocate just exercise. People in the past still stayed thin, without the help of Atkins, South Beach, and the Zone diets.

It's funny that someone mentioned the carbs and their relation to brain function. The brain needs carbs to exist.

the locarb diet fad and the decline of american intelligence seem to coincide, no?  Laugh out loud

Well said. I've been doing it for over a year and I'm healthier than ever as well as loosing some 50 pounds or more.

Even the "no carb" period (which is set to no more than 3 weeks initially and after that no more than a few days at a time to purge excess carbs after for example eating at a restaurant) doesn't mean "no carb" but "extremely limited"...

Of course the entire grain-based food industry (and the dairy industry which also stands to loose) doesn't want the trend to succeed because they'd loose massive amounts of money.
Those two together are a LOT larger than the beef industry...

I have yet to hear about hard evidence that this diet is bad for you, if following guidelines per the Atkins book.

Glad that some of you have modified your original stances to include this possibility.

I was in Vancouver BC last weekend. I knew I could not escape Starbucks, but, silly me, I thought I had a shot escaping that f**king Atkins thing. No such luck.

I do feel a bit guilty that I eat bread and pasta and still am a size 31 and have been for over two years now. But then, I walk everywere. The store is just like three blocks away at the bottom of the hill. How do I keep the weight off? As has been said before:

I got my fat a$$ off the couch!
