Performance: (with 1 passenger, full tank load and 50kg of baggage)
0-100 km/h: 4,7 s
0-200 km/h: 15,0 s
Top Speed (electronically limited): 250 km/h Top Speed (without limiter): 330 km/h
Nordschleife Laptime: 8:00 minutes
Very cool feature (quoting from the press release):
Assisting further with performance the BMW M5 also comes with an MDrive button on the steering wheel, offering a one-touch function that changes the settings on the car to an enhanced sporting character. This set-up is formatted via iDrive with the owner choosing the preferred SMG, Electronic Damper Control and DSC modes and, if specified, the rate of support the Active Seat Control side bolsters offer. Once programmed, the driver just presses the MDrive button on the steering wheel to transform the character of the M5.
The function of the standard fit Head-up Display is also altered when the MDrive button is activated. The default setting sees speed, navigation instructions, check control messages and cruise control settings projected onto the windscreen in the driver’s line of sight. However, if MDrive is activated the display changes to a rev counter including vehicle speed that both flash at the driver when the next gear needs to be selected.

Yeah right...delivery in Texas is about 10 months away. They send you a post car about every month--frightful, no doubt, you'll succumb to a E55
I can't wait.
When your reservation position becomes available, they give your the option of purchasing or passing on the car if it meets your color/option criteria (you had to submit three choices).
A salesguy told me something fairly interesting: The first 4 in Houston have been purchased by MB to be sold as used cars (at about a $10K mark up). The first three months allotment will likely be most expensive---figuring those are the jerks (myself included) that will pony up the dough for the latest and greatest.
Bad news: The option list is fairly plump...meaning they will be expensive. In a related post there was actually a E55 here at Greenway MB that topped $100K!! Hopefully, the BMW will be $15K or more less (gulp).
The front grill does not look right. It's a lot different in the Automobile pics.

Sorry, but the E39 M5 looks much better. Too bad Bangle got to this one, although I am sure it drives like a dream. I'd rather have the upcoming 600hp Cadillac CTS Super V which will be priced somewhere around $65k USD.

Well, some of you know I don't like the direction BMW has taken recently, including the new 5-Series. I find the styling a bit lacking, especially the interior. It also has cheaper plastics inside, with a less driver-focussed design compared to the previous 5-Series. But the M5 is very very nice! I think the styling works quite well, especially on the outside. I do not however, like the fact that they wont offer a traditional manual transmission.
Some more pics ...
Ignore the "WTF" in this one, it's taken from another forum where a user posted that comment ...
And I thought I'd throw in a shot of the current M5's interior. MMMMM

LOL, Andy, I'm assuming you're talking about the seat bottoms, and how they have that extension? Trust me, it's a fantastic thing about BMW sport seats, which are easily my favourite car seats from those that I've tried. It basically makes the seat base adjustable for those with long legs, and provides excellent support. I wish more cars had that.

Well... I like the fact it doesn't have a wood-trim interior. I can't afford a Kia, but, I'd not spend money on this exterior design if I could afford it. What's that fellow's name - Chris Bangedup? How fitting.

Well my company car allowance won't stretch to a M5 but I could get an M3. What do people think of the M3 - is it still worth getting or would a similarly priced Japanese sports car be better (I used to own a R34 Skyline but sold it last year - cool car though if a little impractical in London).
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?

I would go with the M3. The 2003 M3 E46 w/ S54 3.2 Liter DOHC 6 cylinder produces 333 BHP and does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds which will take out most other cars on the road. They also have the option of the Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) lets you shift from the shifter on the center console or shift w/ paddles behind the steering wheel like an F1 car. As far as styling I dont think you can beat an M3, The smoothness and sleekness really makes the car.

I personally like the styling on the M5 concept better... looked more menacing. Though I got to admit that the softened looks on the production M5 are pretty nice. Certainly a major step up from the admittedly bland looking 5 series sedans.
Oh... and a F1-derived engine in a car under $100k. Those clever Germans, too bad they can't win an F1 race.

One thing I hope BMW did with the new M5 was fix the slow gear-shifting response problems that plagued earlier implementations of SMG. I think BMW went only with SMG on the new M5 due to the need to simplify passing emissions regulations, since you only need to certify one transmission design for the car for all world markets. Also, because SMG can operate in automatic mode, it also means more drivers can enjoy the car.
I wonder how long before Alpina modifies a M5 so it has no 250 km/h limiter. 330 km/h top speed is enough to outrun everything on the road except a few extremely expensive exotic sports cars.

What a gorgeous piece of machinery!
Thank goodness that cooler heads at BMW prevailed in the styling dept. and that it HAS NOT got a trunk like the 7. I'm no fan of that style.
I got to drive one of the last generation 5's, last year for that BMW "Drive for the Cure" events that allow you to drive one for charity. It was a 5 wagon, and maaaaan, was that a powerfull beast.
