Do not confuse - or conflate - them with 9-11 thugs on the basis of where they come from. They were not Taliban; they were fleeing FROM the Taliban.
During the height of the cold war, numerous Russians, Cubans, Czechs, East Germans routinely hijacked aircraft in order to win freedom in the West. These poor hapless Afghans were just doing the same.
As far as the Taliban are concerned, they may not be around in Kabul, but they're in Afghanistan all the same. Brezhnev's KGB doesn't exist in Russia any more. That doesn't imply that we pack up all the asylum seekers from the years of the cold war and ship them back to Russia or Romania or Latvia.
