I was making my rounds of all the news sites that I care to read and I was shocked to see how many people at US Universities dropped dead recently. What is causing all these people to just drop dead? There is no way all this can be stress related, if it is we are really turning into a nation of candy-asses.

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/ny-bc-ny--bodyfound0906sep06,0,3568008,print.story?coll=ny-ap-regional-wire

"NEW YORK -- A graduate student at New York University jumped to her death Monday from the rooftop of its prestigious Tisch School of the Arts, police said."

Granted, she is a graduate student studying "arts" so maybe she just looked at her future employment chances but...

"Five other NYU students have jumped to their deaths in the past year, and four were ruled suicides by the medical examiner, Taylor said."

http://www.princeton.edu/Siteware/WebAnnounce.Princeton_Announcements.shtml

"Huang was found at 1:28 p.m. yesterday by a University custodian and her parents, who had arranged to meet their daughter on campus. The cause of death remains unknown, however police officials have ruled out criminal activity."

She was an honors student from high school, probably couldn't handle taking a B in college.

http://www.coloradoan.com/news/stories/20040906/news/1186475.html

"A young woman was found dead Sunday evening inside the Sigma Pi fraternity house near the Colorado State University campus, with police declining to offer specifics about the cause of death but saying there were no obvious signs of foul play."

You think alcohol might have been a factor? Gee, shes really cool now that shes dead. Maybe her psuedo friends will accept her now.

"Young woman's death rattles McGill campus
19-year-old student found in dorm room Police find no trace of violence at scene, await autopsy results to determine cause"

This one is just wierd.

College is a pretty stressful time in many people's lives. First time away from home and old friends for many. Plus depression can be common among many college students as well.

It doesn't help that most colleges and universities are big faceless entities where it is easy to get lost and not noticed. For somebody who is less than well adjusted that cannot be very good.

I had a friend of mine who sadly committed suicide about 3 months into his freshman year at University of Florida. He was far away from home and friends... and far from being a well-adjusted young adult. I was sad, but perhaps even sadder, I was not horribly shocked by the fact that he took his own life.

I think I read somewhere that close to a third of all college students are depressed. Not necessarily severely depressed or manically depressed, but are depressed in some way.

NYU, Princeton, and McGill...

Exactly.

A lot of these kids cannot cope with college, especially at rather prestigious schools. They don't have a social element in their life, their life is books and studying. To get into these schools, many students are virtual recluses in high school whose life now revolves around university and grades. When there is no kind of social release or social outlet stuff like this happens.

I could see why people could commit suicide. There are tremendous pressures going to school (from parents, teachers, self) there is alot of competition. Many deadlines, many tests. At times it seems neverending. Sometimes you need to suck it up get it done then when its all over with have a beer.

JCS is 100% right here, one of the key things in university is a balance, it is critical to get out there and make friends and partiipate the events especially frosh week and who cares how well you do unless you need to hold marks for a scholarship or to stay in your program.

Speak of Universities though I have to say that Western Rules!!!

I agree with all fo the above (#9 is questionable though), the flip side to all of that is the binge drinking and fraternity/sorority parties that go on.

Young, dumb, full of cum is bad enough. When you throw booze, weed, and peer pressure into the mix as well, it's disaster waiting to happen.
