Hi, first of all, I do not know if this is the right forum to put this topic under, but anyway, here it is.
I was reading on A.net that they shot the film 'The Terminal' at several different airports such as the CDG and JFK. Can any one please clarify this for me.
Secondly, my mate who 'knows it all' insists that they created a whole airport set in Hollywood in order to film the movie, so I made a money bet with him about it. I say that most of it was shot at real airports, while he said that the whole movie was shot at a created airport set.
Can anyone back either one of us on this? And are there any websites that say if it was a 'set' or 'for real'?

As far as I know, they did indeed create the terminal from scratch for the film, complete with shops and restaurants.

The main terminal set is in fact a set, built in a hangar.

The terminal set was a near-full-size replica built in a former hangar, with three working sets of escalators, and populated by many familiar stores (e.g. Burger King, Mrs. Fields, W.H. Smith). Some of these brands were recruited by Dreamworks, while others approached the studio when word of the production got out. Many of the stores and restaurants were built by the construction crews that build actual mall and airport stores for the respective companies, and some had fully-functioning equipment (e.g. ovens, cash registers, etc). However, the inclusion of a brand on the set was not a guarantee of inclusion in the film; Dreamworks retained full control over editing, and some brands appear only briefly or not at all.

Also, looking at the filming locations, it appears that the principal "real airport" shots were done at Montreal's Mirabel airport. IIRC, there are some shots out the window where you can see a number of AirTransat aircraft, further suggesting the use of YMX, where AirTransat is the largest carrier.
