Ok now, I thought of something interesting: the tv show M*A*S*H had surgeons, nurses, orderlies, bartenders, cooks, pilots, administrative assistants and admin. clerks, and even a chaplain, but they never showed any barbers. Who cut everyones hair?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Cheers -

I'm pretty sure that I once heard on the show that someone was going over to Rosie's for a haircut. A bar and barbershop in one place...wish they had them here.

There were barbers and dentists in the movie.

There were a lot of things done different from the movie to the TV series to make it work. Have you ever noticed that Klinger, seemingly, had his own tent?

If you read the book, the main story is that, as long as your on the job performance is exceptional, you can get away with a lot. Look at Hawkeye´s and Duke´s contrahends: very strict "regular Army clowns".

BTW, the camp had a dentist... the Painless Pole. He was the center or one episode / chapter.

I have been collecting the DVD's of the series as they have been comming out, the next one hopefully this December.

The early shows in fact kept quite a few of the characters from the movie, but about halfway through they figured out they needed to reduce the cast.

You will also notice that "Hot Lips" Hoolahan changes quite a bit, from being a true bitch to a compassionate nurse and woman.

In one fifth-season episode, titled "Lt. Radar O'Reilly", there is a scene where Klinger is cutting Col. Potter's hair.

While cutting he's singing the tune, "You otta be in pictures. Wa Wa! You're wonderful to see. Wa Wa Wa Wa!"

During various episodes there is a tent marked 'Barbershop' in the compound, usually it's the last tent before the dirt road leading to the chopper pads. One early episode in the first year, showed Hawkeye, Trapper & Spearchucker horsing around while walking towards it.

I think the most significant change to the cast came in the 1st season when the black surgeon (Oliver Harmon 'Spearchucker' Jones) was pulled, since they realized that there were few if any lack surgeons in Korea.

Also, I love the fact that the series ran longer than the war itself did Big grin

Staying with the MASH theme. For those of use with show on DVD listen to 'Hawkeye' discribe his family back home. As most of us know, it was just he and his father...his mother died when he was very young. Well I guess the writters forgot that as in one episode he has a Mother and Father (speaking in the present), the next he has a Mother, Father and Sister. Also, as we know he was from Crabapple Cove, Maine....Well.... in one episode he's from Vermont, then New Hampshire and even once from Michigan.

I'm aware of some the faux pax regarding Hawkeye's family/siblings on some of the episodes, but which episodes elude to him being from Vermont, New Hampshire or Michigan?

From what I remember, the N.H. reference was to either an uncle or cousin he had who was in jail 'making license plates' in the State of New Hampshire.

The only Vermont reference I recall was when he, & Radar were driving B.J. to the 4077th; they come across some soldiers to which Hawkeye asks, "Is there anyone from Maine?"

One soldier repsonds, "I'm from Vermont."

Hawkeye then responds with either a "Sorry." or "Close but no cigar."

It's been a while since I've seen that episode; "Welcome to Korea" first episode of the 4th season (when B.J. first arrives).

The Michigan reference, I believe was directed to his imaginary friend 'Tuttle'; from a first season episode. While making a file folder from John Tuttle, Hawkeye decides to use Battle Creek, Michigan for Tuttle's birthplace.

Speaking of character goofs; there were a couple of episodes that had Henry Blake refer to his wife as Mildred; but in most other episodes, his wife's name is Lorraine.

PHLBOS-

I want to say it comes from Season1 'Dear Dad' where Hawkeye is writing home to his father at Christmas. Most all of the 'Fo-pas' come out of the first two seasons.

Who is your favorite CO, Col Potter, or LT Colonel Henry Blake..?

Two very different characters.. but for me McLean Stevenson was a comic master.

Another haircut scene was at the end of a 3rd season episode called, "Bombed"; Hawkeye is trimming Trapper's hair in the Swamp.

This is the same episode that had Trapper & Hot Lips locked in the Supply 'Building' while the compound was being shelled. Note: the building used for the Supply Building is the same building that's normally the Officer's Club on other episodes.

Just did a mini screening.. It was 'Dear Dad' from Season 1. Early in the show Hawkeye clearly says ' How are things in Vermont'.

Just to add more to the thread.. How many stars had cameos early in their career on MASH..?

Ron Howard was already pretty well known.... but still early in his career. Patrick Swayze came to my mind when I first made the thread as the GI with leukemia. You can also add: Shelly Long, Bruno Kirby (at least I'm 99% sure its him) very quick cameo.

George Wendt as a Marine with the pool ball stuck in his mouth..!! Classic

I know the topic of this thread is "Barbers," but what was Col. Potter's religion? His character refered to Methodist (when he first meets Fr Mulcahy "Can you do a Methodist thing for me on Sundays," "Yes, I handle all major denominations Colonel,"), Presbyterian ("you wouldn't lie to a Presbyterian, would you Father" when talking to Fr Mulcahy about Klinger's new position as company clerk) and Unitarian (when he called the Pentagon to get the Lt/Fr Mulcahy promoted to captain).

Let's not forget G.W. Bailey, who started playing Sgt. Rizzo in the 8th season. He later went on to play Capt. Harris in the Police Academy movies.

Well.... in one episode he's from Vermont, then New Hampshire and even once from Michigan.

It was 'Dear Dad' from Season 1. Early in the show Hawkeye clearly says ' How are things in Vermont'.

EMBQA,

I will take you word on the Hawkeye/Vermont reference since I haven't seen that episode in a while. You still haven't answered me as towards which episodes give reference to Hawkeye stating that he's from Vermont or New Hampshire?

Tiger119,

Speaking of Col. Potter. What about his age? When he first arrived, he told Radar that he was 15 when he served in The Great War (WWI). That would mean that he was born around 1903 and would put him in his late 40s/early 50s during the Korean War. However, in a much later episode (season 10), he tells Dr. Syndey Freedman that he's 62. Do the math.

Side note: In the very first episode that Dr. Freedman (Allan Arbus) appears (Season 2, Radar's Report) he is introduced as Dr. Milton Freedman.

The hair length (esp. in the series, not the movie) is not authentic for the late 40s early 50s.
