Actually during the cold period this tortoise (about a foot long and about 20 pounds heavy) was living in our sitting room and sharing the cat food with the cat (when it smelled the food, it would walk all the way from the sitting room into the kitchen, where the cat bowls were sited, and if the cat wasn´t fast enough to eat, it would just push it away, I think the cat was slightly scared of this living battle tank, and climb into the bowl with both front feet). During summer, the tortoise lived in the garden.
We had both animals for about 17 years, the tortoise died shortly after the cat.

I've heard that a tortoise makes a great pet.....this summer when I was up North fishing a small tortoise crawled up on shore and my dog was scared of it...she kept going over to it and when it poked its' head out...she'd jump away...it was really funny...

We raised this tortoise from about palm size to the size I mentioned above, and they are definitely not stupid. THe big one was too big for a terrarium (at least after a few years), so it was sharing the house with us. It liked to be scratched under it´s chin and would come if my mom whistled softly. We had some other tortoises as well (a Thai Yellowhead, a North American swamp tortoise, a Greek tortoise and a few others I don´t remember anymore), but my parents gave them away to a guy who built a real greenhouse for his tortoises, like a huge terrarium.

Wow...thats so cool! I love all animals.....and if I had a house rather than an apartment.....I'd have lots of pets!!! Right now I have 3 cats & 1 dog....can't have any more until I move out of the city.....

I haven´t got any pets at all. The reason is that I often have to travel on short notice and since I´m living alone, the animal would be left alone for long hours when I´m at work. I´d like to have a cat though.
