I write and eat left-handed, but just about everything else (throwing, golf, batting) is with my right hand.

Hear hear, althought I only golf right handed. Oh, I also play hockey as a righty. I bat left handed though. I'm trying to think if I have switched anything else. I remember a traumatic experience in kindergarten where my old old OLD teacher told me it was wrong to be left handed and wouldn't let me use left handed scissors. I was so confused. Other than that its awesome.

I write left-handed but use my right hand to do the ironing and use cutlery. A lot of people don't realise how restricted us left-handers are in relation to using the likes of scissors, rulers writing books etc. It does make a difference. When I was at school, someone told me left-handed people don't live as long as right-handed people, which wasn't very nice as I wasn't very old at the time.

Just a few examples: I eat, shoot pool and use scissors with my left hand. I write, bat and throw with my right hand. There are many things I can do with both hands.. I guess I fall in that 2%.

Well here are a few things from Kuwait this month magazine :

TOP TEN THINGS THAT ANNOY LEFTIES

1.The thought that if they had been born 200 years ago, they would have been burnt on the stake for witchcraft.

2.Right handed Scissors.

3.Sitting three inches away from a right-hander and trying to write.

4.Teachers who rap the knuckles of kids using 'wrong' hand.

5.The fact that 'left' literally translated means 'wrong'.

6.Several career opportunities remain closed. Left handed surgeons are rarity because there are no suitable surigical implements.

7.Ergonomic mouse designed to fit comfortably in the right hand.

8.The reaction you get from a sales person when you ask for a left-handed potato peeler.

9.Always facing the wall at a resturant for fear of brushing against the right-hander's fork.

10.Womdering why people consider shaking hands with the left as a serious breach of manners !

SOME FAMOUS AND INFAMOUS LEFT HANDED PERSONALITIES :

Julius Caesar, Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, Michael Angelo, Jack the Ripper !, Boston Strangler, Henry Ford, Prince Charles, Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton.

I will send more intersting stuff in the future

So true.. There have been many times I've bumped arms, elbows and forks with righties. Now it's like second nature to sit to the left of a right-handed person to avoid these annoyances..

Well some researches say that we are within the 10% of the people in the world that use there left hand and others say within the 2% as I said above. But I guess it is yet a small figure.

MORE OF A LEFTIE THAN YOU RIGHTLY THINK

Just because you hold your pen or touthbrush in your right hand does not mean that your dexterous prefrance extands to the rest of your body. Here are a few simple tests you could employ to find out weather you are left eard or left eyed or left legged.

1.Imagine the centre of your back is itching. Which hand do you scracth it with ?

2.Interlock your fingures. Which thumb is uppermost ?

3.Imagine you are applauding. Start clapping your hands. Which hand is uppermost ?

4.Wink at an imaginary friend straight in front of you. Which eye does the winking ?

5.Put you hands behind you back, one holding the other. Which hand is doing the holding ?

6.When you bed down to tie your shoe laces which feet do you do first ?

7.Count to three on your fingures, using the forefinger of the other hand. Which fore finger did you use ?

8.Tilt your head over to one shoulder. Which shoulder does it touch? Now cup your ear as if listning to hear someone from a distance, which ear do you cup ?

9.Fixate a small distance object with your eyes and point directly at it with your forefingure. Now close one eye. Now change eyes. Which eyes was open when the fingertip remained in line with the small object ? ( When the other eye, the non-dominant one, is open and the dominant eye is closed, the finger will apear to move to one side of the object. )

10.Fold your arms. Which forearm is uppermost ?

If you have always considerd yourself to be right or left-handed you will probably now have discovered that your body is not one 100% in devotion to its favored side. If you are right handed the chances are that yiu were not able to be 'right' 10 times.

A lot of people don't realise how restricted us left-handers are in relation to using the likes of scissors, rulers writing books etc.

Amen to that!

In grade school in the 70s, I had many teachers attempt to "fix" me by forcing me to write with my right hand. Later, I had others attempt to "accomodate" me by forcing me to use left-handed scissors...even though I can only cut using scissors with my right hand!

And.....THE most annoying thing about being lefty?

That damned smudge you get along your the heel of your left hand from dragging your wrist as you write!

I'm an artist who draws/paints with my left hand, writes with left, bats right, kicks right, cuts w/ scissors on the right. According to that test I should be right handed. strange.

The study which linked left handers to a few years shorter life span was somewhat inconclusive. It was first tested on baseball players, specifically pitchers who were left handed, vs their counterparts. Later studies were only able to find a very weak correlation, at best.

Then again, a significant portion of lefties are considered to be in the genius IQ range. Lefties tend to have a higher percentage of retardation as well.

IMHO being at more extreme polarities than the avg population may lead to a shorter life span. But that's just speculation on my part.  Smile

Left handers have been abused for centuries ! There are hundreds of ( mainly abusive ) terms for left-handers.
There are a lot of sayings were 'right' is good and 'left' is bad eg. 'being in a right frame of mind', 'the divine right of kings', 'it will be all right in the end' as against being 'left out', having ' two left-feet', 'a left handed compliment' ( one that is not really meant ! ) or a left handed oath ( one that you have no intention of keeping.)
In Latin the word for left is 'sinister' which has in English come to mean ominous; the Latin word for right is 'dexter' from where the wrod dexterity comes. In Italian the words for left and left-handed are 'mancino' and 'mancini' which translates to 'defective and deceitful.'
In spanish the wrod for left-handed is 'zurdo' which means 'wrong.' In German left is 'Link' which stands for 'awkward' and a left handed person is called 'linkisch' or 'clumsy'.
The German for right is 'recht' which means 'true, good or just.' In French the wrod for left is 'gauche' which now means 'socially inpet !.' Ambidextrous or the abilty to use both hands equally well really literally translates as 'having two right hands !!!!'

The Chicago sport-writers in the 1980's started the term 'sothpaw' to describe left-handed pitchers. Pitchers in the Chicago stadium faced west towards home plate. Their pitching arm was on the side of town called the South Side.

1980's? As recent as that? Surely not, I thought that term had been in use for a long, long time.

What about the way manufacturers of just about anything design things for right handers, even when there needn't actually be any bias for one or the other. Seriously, if they were to discriminate against any other group in the way they do against left handers, there'd be civil law suits within seconds. But on they go: kettles that you have to use right handed to see how much water is in them, keyboards where they set a number pad on the right hand side (there was and is absolutely no reason why it should be there rather than say at the top or bottom), even toilet flushes for God's sake!

They deliberately design things to make life more difficult for a minority group! Amazing really.  Big grin  Big grin  Big grin
