What Happened To Nickelodeon?

I'm sitting here watching my cousin stare at the goop nick has become. What ever happened to all the good shows on Nick? What happened to Pete and Pete, Rocko, Clarissa, Alex Mack, Shelby Woo, Welcome Freshmen, Are you afraid of the Dark, Salute Your Shorts, Hey Dude (even though I hated it), Doug?

Those shows were gold and basically made my childhood. I think I watched Nick every day of my life from the moment we go cable until the moment I became interested in MTV, and even they have become crap. Noggin is ok sometimes, but it's missing all the good stuff. It seems like Nick is no longer interested in entertaining kids but rather in the money and the ratings. Now they have this crap like Amanda Bynes Show and that Rocketpower thing. They even ruined Rugrats (I know it's because of popularity, but still). Heck the only good shows they have are Spongebob and the Fairly Odd Parents.

I wish they would start a channel that shows reruns of all those good old nick shows from my childhood. Anyone else agree?

I left it out because Rugrats its still on and ever since they had that dil kid the show's gone to crap. Now they have "all drown up" or w/e, and the days of old rugrats have been put to shame.

Oh wow...what a walk down memory lane that post is Corpsnerd...I haven't seen any of those shows in years but I'm getting real nostalgic just thinking about it...there is a channel called Nick GAS which shows a lot of classic Nick game shows...Double Dare, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Guts, Figure it Out (I can't believe Im calling it "classic"), which I get and watch occasionally, reliving my childhood...but I agree, there should be a Nick Classic with the shows you said too, it'd be great...

I agree, kids shows are extremely different than what they used to when we were young. Shows like Double Dare, Wild and Crazy Kids, Count Duckula, What Would you Do? I remember that Saturday mornings and weekday afternoons were the only time I had to watch cartoons like bugs bunny. I also miss those simple cartoons on Nick Jr. I see my 12 year old brother watching the new generation of cartoons and other kids entertainment and you are right corpsnerd, it is a big business now.

Yeah I loved Nick Junior, I remember Papa Beaver's Story Tiem, and the Gnomes, and Maya the Bee (of course that is from when I was a toddler).

Now they have shows like Blues Clues and Dora the Explorer which make kids look like morons and look like they were thought up during the writer's latest crack binge.

I second USAFHummer.... If you can, get "Nick GAS", they play all the great Nick gameshows (as Hummer posted)... I can't believe Figure it Out came out like 8 or 9 years ago, it feels like it just began recently!

This coming from a station where the Nick kids voted for Kerry (see recent thread). No wonder there is mindless drivel on it now.

you should've posted that comment on the other thread.

Plus kids that age tend to choose whomever their parents choose, they have personal opinion on elections. They're choosing whoever their parents want to choose, as they have done the past 4 elections.

That still isn't classic Nick. I grew up watching "You Can't Do That On Television" and "Turkey Television" back in the mid-1980's. I think those were Candian imports. Cartoon spy "Danger Mouse" was a British show. "Nick Rocks" showed music videos, heck even HBO would schedule 30 minute video blocks. Cable TV in the 80's - all 36 channels of it.

I vaguely remember You Can't Do That On Television (that one is from Canada for sure)...the others I havent heard of...my Nick days probably started around 1988 or 1989 so anything before that is meaningless to me...

Yeah, same here. I remember you can't do that on television but the rest of it is blank for me.

Iwas less than 5 years old to non-existant when cable came out.

All of the shows mentioned bring back great memories for me. LOVED "Welcome Freshmen" and "You Can't do That on Television." Nick should bring them back. They certainly have enough channels to do so, and they could certainly, like someone said, make a channel - Niclelodeon Classics.

Cartoons these days absolutely suck. All of them seem to be in the form of Japanimation garbage--with lame, repetitive story lines. I can't believe that kids would watch that crap. I too, miss the old Nickelodeon. Doug, Alex Mack, and Salute Your Shorts were awesome.

Aaah memories! I agree, Nick is complete crap these days! Everything on it is geared towards pop-culture, that's the problem. The older shows like Rocko and Salute Your Shorts didn't have crap to do with pop-culture (in fact Rocko seemed to insult it) The network has been going down hill ever since the current president (of Nick not Viacom) came. It seems it only started sucking since he came.

Since then I have became more of a Cartoon Network fan myself (even though there's too much anime on it).

I think it has everything to do with Viacom. They have turned everything into MTVesque television. My God, they are making this country more ignorant by the minute! Remember when MTV showed videos? Remember when VH1 wasn't reality shows and "They're rich and you're not" bull#@!#? Remember when Spike TV was...oh wait, that one has sucked since it came into being.

I do find Sponge Bob to funny though. I wish they'd make some new episodes of that.

I remember back in the mid 80s before my parents could afford cable, Nickelodeon was synonymous with slime and other gross stuff (a la Double Dare). I also remember watching that one cartoon called "Cops", Pinwheel, Today's Special, and Inspector Gadget...those were the days.  SmileAnyone remember the old song? "Nick nick nick n-nick nick nick...nickelodeonnn!"

Fairly odd parents and Spongebob are the only good cartoons left on there. Some of their sitcoms aren't bad but nothing at all like it used to be.

Yea...it seems like Nick has totally gone away from that these days...at Nick's peaks in the late 1980's to mid 1990's, it seemed like every show featured some sort of mess....Double Dare, What Would You Do? (this was my favorite at the time, would love to see this again), You Can't Do This On Television, Figure It Out...etc...

I believe the "slimings" started on "You Can't...." There was even a recipe for it. It was green Jell-O, dishwashing detergent, and a couple of ofther things.

BTW: Turkey TV was a sort of successor show. Christine and Kevin were both on it. They probably about 40 years old now. Damn, I'm feeling old.
