I'm not surprised, with all the kidnapping and murder of foreigners in Iraq going on. Their work in Afghanistan was shut down recently as well, following the death of 4 of their staff (my cousin was working at the MSF base with the people who were killed, and had to be evacuated quick-fast). The people who are hurt most be the ending of the work MSF do, are the local people. MSF provide a non-partisan and apolitical primary health care service to people desperately in need. It is noble work in my opinion, and deserves respect.

German civil defense aid workers of the Technical Aid Service, building wells and fixing basic infrastructure have to be guarded by German Federal Border Police GSG9 anti terror cops.
The reason why the aid organisations are targeted is that they are providing and independend help. The radicals want the population only to go to their own organisations for aid, to widen their influence.

One of the reason it is thought that NGO aid organisations were targetted in Afghanistan, is a rumour that the Americans (bless 'em) were threatening the locals that NGO aid would be withdrawn if they did not cooperate in the hunt for Taliban and Al-Quaeda - giving the impression that this aid was controlled by and in cahoots with, US Forces, which was never the case. This was just a rumour however.
