With the news being circulated that John Ashcroft, among others, wishes to resign and move on....who will replace him?
My money's on Rudi Giuliani. Well respected, even famous US Prosecutor who helped bring down major mob figures in NYC, as well as being one of Americas most recognized and respected figures. His qualifications are definitely there, and he would bring some new light on our Justice Department.
The only question for me is will they want him for Department of Homeland Security.
There are some other openings coming as well...some say that Colin Powell wants out, even though he denies it and says he has not set any deadlines. I think there might be some interesting shakeups coming. The President has surrounded himself with people who are unafraid of their own opinions and has had a pretty lively cabinet so far, I would like to know who is next.

Rudy has stated he has zero interest in being part of this administration, even as recently as Tuesday night on CNN during the coverage.
Its too much to hope that Bush will assign a moderate Republican to this post, and Giuliani is a pro-choice pro-gay moderate Republican.

Thats different than what he said on another network, which was "It's too early to discuss something like that. Lets focus on the election first" Which was the correct thing to do then. I would not eliminate this from the realm of possibility.

How about offering the job to John Edwards. John's unemployed come January and W need to do something to help those who have lost their jobs. He's an attorney. He was purportedly ready to be a heart beat away from the presidency. Senate confirmation would be no problem.
It shows that W is up for bi-partisanship. If John is really opposed to the Patriot Act, this would be a great position to do something about it.

Strategically Rudy would be a good choice for AG. He may say he doesn't want it, but they always say stuff like that. There is a reason he stumped so hard for Bush. Presidents in their second terms, when they don't have to worry about being re-elected and taking care of their base, often try to look to their legacy. In that light, he may want to appear as moderate by replacing Ashcroft with Giuliani.

Attorney General is supposed to be a non-political posting in the US setup. In that respect it is a political dead-end for anyone wanting to go higher up in politics. Janet Reno was always somewhat detached from the Clinton administration in that she tried to paddle her own canoe on some legal issues and wasn't percieved as being an administration insider as such.
It's not a huge stretch of the imagination to contemplate Rudy taking on the defence or even foreign affairs portfolio. Someone with the charisma and respect Rudy has could slot well into Colin Powell's position, as I could see him attacking that subject with the kind of dedication he showed to the Mayorality and all of its inherited problems. When he replaced Mayor Dinkins, he took on much more than just legal affairs and grew into the job.
Someone of his political stature could thrive in the semi-diplomatic role.

Well this has been discussed on other threads, but I'll give a recap.
Rudy may *want* to be president, the Red zone may love him now because they only know the tough guy Mayor of 9/11, but given how conservative this country has gone, a man who is...
twice divorced,
had a public affair with his press secretary while mayor and goot her a plum job when he left, and
had a public affair with another woman while mayor that prompted his wife to hold a tearful, soap opera news conference. I can just imagine the commercials on that one in the primaries.
Not allowed by the divorce court judge to stay in the mayoral residence, he stayed in the apartment of his good friend and good friend's boyfriend. I can just see the commercials on that one. Rudy is socially moderate and pro-gay rights.
Likes opera and has been known to dress in drag (I'm not making that up!)
Mostly for charity events and as a goof , but again, Imagine the commercials in, say, Oklahoma, during the primaries!
Not that this soap opera stuff should make a difference, I'm firmly of the beliefe that one's private life is private, but I seriously think that in a bruising primary fight when Republicans have to tack right in a country that has tacked right, he'll get eaten alive. I think he realizes it as well and he's Jonesing for a high visiblity elder statesman job.
And if the country lurches back towards the center, well, he's still young.
