Chugiak Electric, one of the largest electric utilities in Alaska...you know that place that lives on petro-dollars. is looking at installing a wind farm on Fire Island outside of Anchorage. If built it is expected to replace 1/10 of the production of the gas turbine generators the utility currently uses.

No doubt there will be NIMBY opposition as has occurred against the windfarm build in Nantucket Sound - all the weekend sailors and second-home-owners on the Cape are up in arms about it.
My cousin in law is an engineer who builds wind farms (amongst other things) and he reckons the electricity they produce is more expensive than fossil-fuel electricity (because of the cost of building the windmills) and that windfarm energy has to be state-subsidised in order to compete with fossil fuel energy. Does anyone know how true this is ? I'm all for alternative energy, don't get me wrong.
