Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps (swimming '04) ended up in the slammer after a MD Trooper witnessed him run a stop sign. Turns out he had been pounding drinks down, one after another - DWI. Phelps got cuffed and stuffed in the back of the car faster than he could swin 200 meters. I wonder if this will have any effect on future olympic participation.

Concordeboy: Dumbass.... there's NEVER an excuse for drunk driving.
Love to see 'em throw the book at this worthless sack of biomass.
I agree with you heartily.
And I'm sure for consistency's sake you'd extend that judgment to Dubya and Dick Cheney with their multiple DUI's and Laura Bush with her expunged record from vehicular manslughter while driving drunk. Worthless pieces of biomass, right?
(Yeah yeah, go ahead and show the perfume bottle...whatever...)

Point being that he's a kid. And kids do crazy things.
Doesn't mean he shouldn't be prosecuted just like anyone else though. But it does mean that people, including yourself, shouldn't get all excited and demand a few pounds of his flesh.

"my most sincere wish at this moment would be for this impudent fcuk to be punished to the point of deathwish."
A bit loony, aren't we? Or are we having a Squeaky Fromme for Charles Manson moment?
Give the guy a break. He was quite the Olympic inspiration to thousands of athletes. After all you elected a man with a DUI record. Care to send Dubya to the electric chair for his rash impetuousness as a young man too?
And as far as punishment goes, he got it.
No more multi-million Wheaties endorsements for our toothy studly Olympic champion.

"A 19yr-old is generally an idiot no doubt, but is legally no kid...."
Ahem...on behalf of all fellow 19 year olds around the world I take some strong offense to that and wonder what on earth you were thinking...after all, not too long ago you were 19, would you characterize your 19-year old self as an "idiot"...I certainly don't for me...

In any case, by tomorrow his lawyers will have him engage in a Clintonian spate of denial (how do you define car? DUI? drunk?) or engage in a public display of remorse invoking God, country, mom, and apple pie.
We may even see him in one of those MADD TV commercials engaging in a desperate bid for his rightful place on a Wheaties box.

Care to tell us your arrest record Jay? Or was it expunged?
Typical 19 year old making a stupid decision. Lucky for him, he killed no one.

Jaysit,
``I want to say that last week I made a mistake. I wanted to share my feelings and I know that getting in a car with anything to drink is wrong, dangerous and is unacceptable,'' Phelps told The Associated Press.
``I'm 19, but I was taught that no matter how old you are you should always take responsibility for your action, which I will do. I'm very sorry this happened.''

As I said, b. Public display of remorse. God and country will come in one of those silly articles in the Sunday Parade Magazine.
Leave the kid alone. How many of you didn't get plastered at 19? Now admittedly we may not have been behind the wheel of a car, but we have no idea how dangerously drunk he was. We've all driven after we've had a few drinks, no harm done.

Speak for yourself arsehole... I might not have always been the sharpest knife in the drawer as a teen, but I NEVER disrespected American life enough to EVER do that godforsaken crap.

Yes, your respect for American life is so pure that you vote for the first hoodlum willing to sell your gay arse down the river.
Spare me your sanctimony, closet case. Save it for the head of the anti-gay GOP honcho whose arse you kiss.

Well, it's a lesson for all of those who drink and drive, regardless of age. Yeah, I recall being 19 . . . at that age, the best description of a guy is:
"young, dumb, and full of cum."
