As we all know Arafat died this week and was laid to rest today.
One of the things that I thought was interesting was the way his people were scrambling to find the money that he had socked away over the years...upwards of Billions in Swiss bank accounts that apparently only he and his wife knew how to tap into.
Few questions:
How did he exactly come about obtaining these funds? Why was this money sitting in a personal account rather than assisting the Palestinian People as I would assume it was intended to do? Why was his wife receiving so much money per year as a stipend, and why will she continue to receive 22 Million dollars a year in the wake of Yasser's death? Why aren't the Palestinians who all but live in squallor more upset about this? Why isn't the Arab world more upset about this?

A lot of the money came from wealthy Arab donors, money that was apparently dedicated to Arafat's organization, the PLO, rather than the State of Palestine. An analogy would be political donations given to the DNC or the GOP, but not to the USA.
In any case, Arafat was more interested in keeping the PLO financially viable than doing anything tangible for his people (schools, hospitals, etc.).
A lot of Arafat's money supply dried up after he supported Saddam's 1991 foray into Iraq, although I'm sure his goons were running around the Arab world asking for money. There is a lot of money in the Gulf, and I'm sure many gave him money so he could go away and stop being a nuisance in their own backyard.

His wife is probably the most hated Palestinian woman ever - she is hunting for nothing but his money, and any sympathy for her in the Arab world dissapeared after all the bullshit she said after her husbands death.

I think theres more to it than him taking money and hiding it, but I will ask my dad, he would know more than me. If it was that simple, he would definatley be hated.

In the few years between the first and second intifada the money was used for good uses, the cities were improved, but obviously they could not do much due to the occupation.

Acc. to German radio news I listened to about a year ago, at least ten percent of the money sent to the Palaestinians went directly into his own pockets.
