Advice For Euros: How To Handle Sales Tax In NY

Hopefully that topic says it all: How do I handle sales tax if buying something in NY? I seem to remember that it amounts to around 6%-8%.

Do I have to pay it as a European?

Do I get it back on leaving the country (which is how it is done in Germany)?

Are there any good websites that explain all this?

Thanks for your help!! Much appreciated!

Actually...so do I: Kirkie will tell us how to flood NY, Banco will explain why NY sales tax is definitely indicating that England is after all going to win a big tournament, Kaz will scream an occasional "yayers" and Klaus will wag his wisened head and tell us that it's all GWB's fault.  Big grin

AND I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO HANDLE SALES TAX IN NY, GODDAMMIT!!!!!

I place a Fatwa on NY Sales Tax. It is blasphemous, and an affront.

It's simple really, you buy stuff they charge you a percentage based on the sale price. Depending on where you buy stuff the taxes could be higher but will never exceed 8.75%.

You do not get the money back and you pay tax like everyone else.

New York E

State Rate 4.25

Highest Local rate 4.50

Highest State Rate 8.75

In New York City your tax rate will be 7 5/8%. http://www.tax.state.ny.us/pdf/publications/Sales/pub718_304.pdf

This is serious!!!!

Edit: Thx, Techrep, btw it's 8 5/8% in NYC

Are you sure about the non-refundability? There's a treaty in place to prevent double taxation between USA and Germany!

Andreas,
I believe there's NO WAY to get the sales tax refunded. If you're thinking about things like Global Refund you may just forget it.
Shopping in states with low or no sales tax is the only way around I guess.

L410: Yes I've been searching around on the www, and keep hearing this! So it would be wise to get to the other side of the Hudson to NJ, where sales tax is 6%.

JGP: How did you like Berlin?

Kirkie: we ARE the Huns, so how can we be worse than them???  Nuts

Kaz: No I always managed to leave the room before they lifted their skirts and started pissing on the floor

Andreas - Berlin was COOL ! I had a great time, went to lots of museums (the Pergamon, the one by Checkpoint Charlie, and the Egyptian Museum in Charlottenburg), walked down Unter Den Linden, through the Brandenburg Gate, saw the Reichstag/Bundestag (I didn't go up the dome because I am boycotting Norman Foster who is a talentless hack), saw Checkpoint Charlie and the memorial there, and saw a 3D Imax movie - all in one day ! Now I'm exhausted. It's a wonderful city and I will definitely go back and see more.
