I've been there 3 times. I must addmitt that I was only 12 when I last visited. I remember the city as being very beautiful.
Now as an adult, I've heard there's an awesome nightlife and I know for a fact the women there are very beautiful. You should enjoy it. So here are a few things you should do:
1. Don't go alone.
2. Don't go with your girlfriend.
3. Don't go with anybody that knows your girlfriend.
4. Go with your buddies.
5. Be nice to people. Hungarians are cool, but if you piss them off you'll regret it
6. Never refuse if anybody offers you food.
7. Never refuse if anybody offers you drinks.
8. DON'T GET DRUNK AND PASS OUT.
Ok that's about it.
Sorry, I can't remember where we stayed or how much it was... my mom and dad took care of that.
Superior decisions reduce the need for superior skills.

I was there last year. It's very cool, but unlike Prague, which has really developed big time and seems quite Western, Budapest still has an edge to it... you definitely know you're behind the former Iron Curtain.... at least on the Pest side. Buda is on the hill, and where the Palace and museums are. Pest is where the nightlife/action is, but as I mentioned, it definitely isn't as developed or hopping as Western capitals (Vienna, Berlin, etc). It's very charming, but also a bit stark.

EZY,
Budapest is perfect for a 2-3 days visit.
The Castle, the cable car and old Buda streets, the baths (try it !), old Pest cafés, the Parliament (really worth a visit), a pinch of night life.
Be careful, women are terribly attractive...beware of astonishing ladies sitting at the hotel bar.
Not plenty of good restaurants, but there is a first class typical place on Buda hill which serves remarkable game (right season for that). Ask a local.
When asked to drink, ask for a Pushta cocktail. People will love you.
If you make it 3 days, an afternoon and evening at Lake Balaton is a good idea.

I am in Budapest at least once a year. It is an amazing city. I usually can occupy myself with a week there each year, as well as time with my family elsewhere in Hungary.
Budapest has a very comfortable, at home feeling about it. There is a ton to see and do at a very reasonable price. For shopping, the main tourist trap area is Vaci utca, just east of the Danube.
Check out the MAGYAR ÁLLAMI OPERAHÁZ (Opera House), it's beautiful inside. It's right off the 'Opera' stop of the metro on Andrassy utca. Andrassy utca has tons of shopping, and some great restaurants.
Parliament is worth a check as well. Impressive both inside and out.
One thing I would suggest doing is a cruise down the Danube for an hour or an hour and a half. It is most impressive to be on the river at sunset, so you see the city from the river during both day and night.
It's a great city, and there is a ton to do. Enjoy!
By the way, avoid taxi's at all costs. The subways, buses, and trams are cheap and efficient, while the taxi's will rip you off.

He asked what Budapest was like. Not what your fantasy was like.

I have an uncle that was from Budapest, I will talk to him and see what he can remember. I know that he was never so glad to escape and come to Canada back as a child but I am sure things have changed for the better.

Ouch, now that is below the belt... do I sense a little jealousy justin?
If you want to argue over where, when, how and why I use my travel concessions, im more than happy to argue via email.
Maybe there is a life outside my anal passage, but I like it in here so I think i'll stay right where I am... I guess you found alex's anal passage (life) better than your own...
