Someone told me that when the US President visits another nation-ie Canada, his limo is carried on a military transport to that nation. He does not use the visiting nations vehicles. Is this true?

That's correct. The President's limo (actually two of them, I believe) are brought into the airport in advance of his arrival. Very high-tech, heavily armored vehicles that afford protection and communication for the President.

Yes, it's true.

In fact, any time the President travels on Air Force One, his motorcade vehicles travel to the destination ahead of him in US Military Cargo Aircraft, usually C141 Starlifters.

I'm guessing they'll switch to using a C-17 when the last of the C-141's are retired?

That is correct. Presidential transportation changed drastically following the assassination of John Kennedy in Dallas. Up to that time, the use of the bullet resistant bubble top was up to the desires of the President. Following Kennedy's death, the Secret Service determined that transporting the president in an open top car would be the rare exception in the future. The President always travels in the Secret Service limo for security reasons and there is always a backup car on hand. Construction of the car is classified information but it is bullet resistant and bomb proof. These cars are operated by the Secret Service and are stored in a secure facility in the DC area when not in use. Similar limousines are kept at the Secret Service training facility for training and refresher purposes. One ex-presidential limo, the X-100, is owned by the Henry Ford Museum. That is the car in which Kennedy died and was modified later with a permanent hard top.

In short, the reason that the President travels in his personal limo is that for security reasons, the Secret Service will not risk their protectee's safety by allowing him to travel in a vehicle that they do not have full control over.

What happens to the old limos when they are replaced? I know that Clinton had Cadillac Fleetwoods, and Bush has Devilles now, so what happened to the Fleetwoods? What did Reagan and Bush 41 ride in?

Reagan's had some mid to late 70's Lincoln. That's the car he's getting into when Hinkley took a shot at him. Those were replaced by early 80's Caddy's. Bush 41 used those, and some of the late 80's box square Town Cars. Clinton got those, and a mid 90's Fleetwood's or two. Motor Trend or Car & Driver usualy do some sort of joking road test article about new limo's, when the government buys them.

I liked the Secret Service support cars. Thru the 80's it was a Mercury wagon, wood paneling and all. Then Suburbans took over.

When Dubya was in the Tampa area, last, a C-17 was hauling the support cars.

On a few of GWB's recent campiagn flights, he already switched to C-17's. I saw two C-17's parked adjacent to Air Force One when he visited PHL about 1.5 months ago.

The Lincoln that Reagan had was something other than the X-100. The X-100 was a Lincoln Continental convertible originally, later a permanent hardtop complete with the suicide doors. It was retired by the time that Reagan came along. As for the 1990s Cadillacs, one of the few known facts about them was that for all practical purposes, they were Cadillacs in name only. Only the hood and trunk lid were GM parts. Everything else was specially made by the coach manufacturer contracted to build the cars. That is probably the same case with the new Caddys. The 1990s Fleetwoods are now used as training cars at the Secret Service training facility in MD.
