What would you do? What laws would you change? Please leave out the actual Congress vs. President thing...and just discuss your ideal American system of laws. If you want to do your own country, that's cool too, but I'd also be fascinated to see a foreign perspective of changing our system of laws.

In addition to most of President Bush's policies, I wouls also:
Strengthen border security
More cargo ships searches
bust down on the number of drug dealers
Make social security optional
National ban on gay marriage
Completely stop abortions
Just my view of a perfect America!
I probably left out a few things.

Here's what I would do (just indulging your post):
1. Abolish the Federal Minimum Wage. In this day of outsourcing, downsizing, and layoffs, we just can't compete in a global economy. We just can't. And here we are, already pricing ourselves out of business and people are clamoring for a minimum wage HIKE. That's like getting laid off from your job and turning around and buying a new car.
I think that the market should decide what wages are worth. I know what you're thinking about "slave" wages. But hey, if someone fills the position and is willing to work for that wage, then so be it. If there are no takers, then the employer would have no choice but to increase the wage being offered.
2. Liquidate Social Security after 2010 and make participation for those born after 1960 optional.
The government really, REALLY dropped the ball with this program. How can the People possibly do worse for their retirement?
3. Allow abortion to remain legal, but only as a medical emergency and not as a form of birth control.
4. Marriage: between a man and a woman. Period.
5. Lower the drinking age to 18.
6. Legalize hemp/cannibis/marijuana. Not just as a drug, but also for the products it can yield as alternatives to polyester and paper. The potheads will always be potheads. Those who don't want to smoke it wont.
7. Outlaw field sobriety checkpoints as they are unreasonable search and siezures based on no probable cause, red light cameras, and cap traffic violation fines at $25, but allow a point system to be implemented that could result in much faster revokation of drivers licenses and vehicle impounds. Hey, it's all about safety, right?
8. Allow tax deductions for all Social Services to be voluntary. In other words, if you want to see welfare et. al. continued, you have the choice to pay into it. If not, then you can pocket that money. Of course by exercising this option, you will be ineligible for all servies.
OR limit the amount of time one could spend living on the dole to 90 days. If any man or woman, while living on any kind of State, Federal, or County aid has a child, BOTH parties involved will be subject to mandatory sterilization or immediate cancellation of benefits.
9. This is the United States: English is the official language. No taxpayer money will be used to print any literature or provide foreign language translator services.
10. NO benefits of any kind (including medical care and schooling) for illegal aliens OR THEIR CHILDREN. Any person who knowingly hires an illegal alien for work will be subject to Federal prosecution and mandatory prison time.
11. Ammend the Constitution to decree that children born in the United States to illegal aliens are NOT citizens. Only children born to natural or naturalized citizens can be citizens.
12. Declare the Teamsters Union a criminal organization and give a 90 day disbanding ultimatum. Those still identifying themselves as "Teamsters" after that time are subject to arrest.
13. Any form of discrimination, whether it's "traditional" white against black, or "politically correct" i.e. Affirmative Action will be a felony. No person or organization can set any kind of quotas or give any sort of preferential treatment based on race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

First off it really isn't Congress vs. President it is actually a system of Checks and Balances which does not allow the Judicial Branch, the Legislative Branch, or the Executive Branch to become to powerful. It is actually a good idea if you ask me. But if I became president I would ban gay marriage. No offense to all that may be gay out there but I would do this because the purpose of life is to be fruitful and multiply. By having children going to gay marriages and by having children exposed to this.... I think this is wrong. Kids only learn to have certain qualities....they Are born being racist....or Gay...we Just teach them and show them that it is all right. Soon enough you are going to see a great number of gay teenagers if you allow gay-marriage because they grew up thinking it was OK. I would also legalize drugs. We spend too much money trying to stop smuggling which we really cant, we spend too much of our tax money paying for these people who deal drugs to stay in jail, and look what happened with the 18th Amendment which demanded the banning of alcoholic substances. By banning them this caused more crime and smuggling into the country. Then when that Amendment was repealed by the 21st amendment which allowed for the consuming and buying of alcoholic products crime went way down. I think that by legalizing drugs crime would go way down. But, I think that we should tax drugs heavily SO we can pay for things that we can't afford like armor for our troops in Iraq. I would also have to say I would unite the middle east... I don't know how but I would do it. Vote for me in 2032!! That is when I want to become president!!

I would make this a free country, and do what is in the best interest of the people.
-people can put what ever they want to in their body's. If they cause a crime while under the influence of a drug (all drugs are legal) they will be shot.... so mabe they wont do drugs/heavy drinking then because they know the may be killed.
-the schools would need a major change... All teachers must folly STRICT guidelines of teaching...... No more hard or easy teachers. Grades and test scores wont determine your what you do in life!
- have a LARGE space program. Build space hotels and moon bases.
-in order for security at airports to move quicker at airports only random white males between ages 18-60 will be subject for searching. All Arab looking people will be searched (male and female).Everyone still passes through the metal detectors.
-I am your democratic dictator, I am very nice and fair. I do know what's best for the people.
-many other things too.
I know this may sound wrong to all you who love your perfect little America, but we need to change for the better. WE CAN HAVE A FREE COUNTRY!!

One problem with that we are a free country. If we were completely free to do what we want then this country would be a complete mess with rebellions left and right. It would be total chaos. I also think that teachers should not have strict guidelines because being a student now I enjoy being able to have fun with teaching and I like the ability of cracking joke here and there. Also I am a bad test takes ro that wouldnt be fare. There are also people who do really well on tests and dont do homework so you cant determine your life on that. That is just my opinion on your opinion of what this country should be like.
By the way thanks Bushcheney2004...I personally am not a stoner... but that was my opinion.... and I only wanted to unite the middle east so we dont have to send our butts over there and die. I am also 13 so I do not have all of my priorities straight.

OK... OK..... "WE CAN HAVE A FREE... ER COUNTRY!!". I haven given out all the details on how it works, but there's a way. The school shouldn't be early 1900s strict.... I too like to have a more relaxed environment a school, its just that all teachers must do the same assignments and tests.

So do you think after banning gay marriage, theyre all gonna get busy being fruitful and multiplying?
Soon enough you are going to see a great number of gay teenagers if you allow gay-marriage
They could still marry the opposite sex, you know.
they grew up thinking it was OK
That is a GREAT message to send.
I think that by legalizing drugs crime would go way down.
Planning some Columbian drug-lord diplomacy? I would also have to say I would unite the middle east... I don't know how but I would do it. Vote for me in 2032!!
Oh boy, you got my vote there.
And btw, what do you think about civil unions. I do understand to a degree the ban on gay marriage, protecting a word is important to some. I think a good compromise for Bush if this ban goes ahead, would be at the same time is a national legalization of civil unions.

Hey BushCheney2004 maybe if you made gay marriage mandatory that would take care of the abortion issue?
No American shall live under more than three levels of Government; that is, Federal, State, and either City or County but not both.
Each level of Government shall have one, and only one method of raising revenue. I'd recommend Federal sales tax, State income tax and City or County property taxes as being the most manageable mix. Every Government activity shall be either 100% tax-supported or 100% user-charge supported but whichever is selected, not one cent may be received from the other.
Government employees shall lose the right to vote at the level at which they are employed, for example, Federal employees may not vote at the Federal level in elections but may vote for State and local issues.
Presidential election shall be by popular vote. The electoral college is a relic that is being manipulated for personal gain.
Treaties shall require a 75% majority of the population and all treaties shall be 100% reciprocal.
The total payroll of any level of Government including elected officials but excluding military shall not exceed 12% of its governed population.
All government employees shall have no tax-supported retirement other than Social Security.
All government salaries shall be rolled back 25% and then tied to minimum wage. For example the present salary of the President is $400K. This would be rolled back to $300K and that would be divided by the Federal minimum wage. Hereafter, the salary of the president would be 58,252 times the Federal minimum wage. The only way the sleazeball Congress could then give itself a raise would be to raise the minimum wage which they should be reluctant to do.
If a person becomes a celebrity for having committed a crime or other high-profile misdeed, their entire earnings above 2Xminimum wage shall be taxed at 98% (Sorry Ollie, G. Liddy, Monica - you guys are a blight)
Our borders are closed. Bloom where you are planted people! If Mexico cannot offer decent lives to its people then Mexico is guilty of a crime against humanity in overbreeding its resources. Not picking on Mexico, but 10% of all the world's Mexicans live in the USA. If immigration is permitted between any two countries the immigrants bear the burden of changing cultures.
The final exam in civics for high school students shall be the ability to understand any law on the books. If a law is deemed incomprehensible it shall be re-written in plain language at the expense of the original author if still alive.
There shall be a two-term limit at each level of Government. Thus a person could serve as mayor twice, Senator or Congress once each and President and Vice President once each or twice for either. There should be no more career politicians. They do us less and less good with each passing term.
There shall be a five year moratorium on new laws. After the basics were covered ALL subsequent laws exist only to permit someone more sophisticated than yourself to steal what you have.
Election reforms shall include provisions that the incumbent may not campaign but must stand on his record and the challenger shall be bound by truth-in-advertising laws. After all, running for office IS motivated by personal gain - in other words, selling you something.
No, and I mean absolutely NO riders may be attached to ANY piece of legislation.
The income tax shall be flat-rate with no deductions for anything. Evading paying tax on any income shall be treason.
Defrauding the military shall be treason.
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

Civil Unions is a tough one especially if you ban gay marriage. It would be a toug decision to make. But I would have to agree with you on that topic.
I am also not a stoner I just think that we are wasting all this money on trying to catch smugglers meanwhile it is not working. Anybody could have drugs if they really wanted them. But more importantly drugs should be legal in all states for health issues if approved by more than one doctor.

I agree with the medical drug issue and all. But if we legalize the stuff, the whole fundamental system would have to change. The government can absolutely not be supporting the drug cartels and the crime that goes with them in supplying countries. I imagine companies such as cigarette companies would have to develop.

- Abolish the death penalty
- Intend to become a party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court
- At least critically review the so called Patriot Act
- Sign the Tokyo Agreement
- No development of so called Mini Nukes
- More cargo ships searches and other means to protect the homeland
- Make social security mandatory (and affordable) for people with low income
- And perhaps: More power to representatives - less power to the President

Hey, no problem. Thinking for yourself, talking about it, getting the facts, and devising your views are what its all about. They sure an change too. Im 18 now, and during the time of the 2000 election I was a pretty strong Bush supporter and Republican. This parboil came from me being still pretty young and adhering to what was around me. My parents are pretty conservative, and I do live in the 2nd most Republican county in the nation. Throughout the past few years though I've realized IM definitely a Democrat.

I add to my list that the death penalty should be more common, for anybody who murders two or more people.
Eh,this is a really tricky subject. I'm not totally against the death penalty, and think it has its place. What i do think is that for every wrongfully convicter person that gets put to death, that is one too many. If a revelation occurs and the real killer is found, it would be too late. I think for the death penalty to be used there has to be absolute CONCLUSIVE evidence, a higher standard than just a conviction. Also an interesting fact is that with all the appeals and litigation that goes into death penality cases, the numbers usually come out so as it would have been cheaper for life in prison.
