Anyone have a good suggestion of a hotel in Reykjavik? I might go there in February and I need a good hotel, not a luxury but with shower/bath in every room and preferably with breakfast. I'm thinking of prices around 6,000 to 8,000 ISK per night. It must be in the city centre or a maximum five minutes walk from the city centre. Since only FI is flying from ARN there isn't much to discuss concerning the flight, but perhaps FI has a package deal or owns hotels in Reykjavik?
What's the prices like in Reykjavik and in Iceland when it comes to eating in restaurants, renting cars etc? Can I expect the same as in Stockholm (approx. 1,500 ISK for a meal and 360 ISK for a beer)?

When I was in Reykjavik last April I stayed in the Hotel Vik. It's a little way out of town - probably a 15-20 minute walk, although there are of course buses that you could take. It's not a 4 star hotel, but was reasonably cheap, clean and fairly comfortable, and all rooms are ensuite. I had a single room which was bright and airy, although only had a single bed, but did have a TV and a shower. The price does of course include breakfast which is a buffet affair - adequate, but wouldn't keep you going till dinner time! There are also some reasonable restaurants in the area, and it's only a short walk from a shopping mall (can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, but it's well known).
Check out www.hotelvik.is - their winter rate is only 6,900ISK for a single room.

It's a challenge to find anything inexpensive in Reykjavik .
Here is a link to a hotel directory, many of these hotels/guesthouses are located in the city centre (I'm not sure about rates though). http://hotel.is/
From there you can access their individual web pages.
Regarding prices in general, meal at a nice restaurant is generally around 1500-2500 ISK, + drink/s.
At clubs and restaurants the beer is really expensive around 600 ISK for 33cl.! (That's almost 10$!)
Common price for renting a small car is around 4500-7000 ISK I believe, depending on the size and whether you have unlimited km or not.
Here is a link to the AVIS homepage; http://www.traveliceland.is/page_23.html.
Hope this helps
BAViscount;
You are referring to the Kringlan, which I guess could be translated as; The Bagel. (It makes more sense in Icelandic )

Yes, that's the one! I remembered the name minutes after I posted my response. I actually asked for directions there from a restaurant near my hotel. They gave me an elaborate set of instructions that either meant a cab ride or two buses - I chose to walk and it took me all of ten minutes! I got the impression that Icelanders don't like to walk too much.
Anyway SK A340 - I hope you find something that suits your needs - Iceland really is a fantastic country - I know I hope to go back there soon. And do check out the Hotel Vik (in my response above) - it suited my needs perfectly, and I'm not that easy to please when it comes to hotels! I would certainly choose to stay there again the next time I'm in town.

Thanks for the help! I've found some hotels, but it's hard to know where they are. I've been in Reykjavik once, but it was six years ago and I don't remember that much of how the city is arranged but I do know that I don't want to stay at the hotel I was staying in that time. I remembered a huge church and I think it was a hotel next to it, could it be Leifur Eiriksson? I think that was in the center of Reykjavik.

Yes, I think the Leifur Eriksson is across the road from Hallgrimskirkja. I remember reading very mixed reviews about that hotel, some good, others not so good, but it is of course very central.
You might want to try something like tripadvisor.com for hotel reviews - all written by people who have stayed at the hotels rather than by travel companies. I use it all the time now to try and decide on the best places to stay.

BAViscount, you are correct, most Icelander's avoid walking at all cost . (Because the city is so spread out and the public transport system is not that good, most people have their own cars.)
SK A340, the down-town area has the postal code 101, everythin within that area is in a comfortable walking distance to the city centre.
